Also curious what sliders people use for the rear pull out drawers. With drawers that long, they must be super beefy.

Paul, I'm thinking of downsizing to a newer, smaller solar panel so I can fit a bigger roof fan. I would have to imagine there are more efficient panels out there that could give me the same performance as this massive one. This one seems a bit dated, but I guess I can't really tell.

Well, no. The size of solar panels has not come down. That panel is really good and the key to that van. One thing you could do is get 2 smaller panels and mount them crossways.

    Re: Sprinter build thread

Guess I'll rethink this plan then...

I drove down to LA and back for the weekend to ride bicycles. Randomly pulled over at 2:30am to nap on my way down - looked at a map, drove down a long long dirt/paved road and said "that looks good". Woke up in an ATV park. Subtract two wheels from those machines and I'd consider going back, it was rad and only an hour out of LA in the Angeles National Forest. Sunrise so bright it woke me up through the sunshades and an eye mask.

Driving home, its a mega climb out of the city, about 4 or 5k feet of elevation. Traffic, of course. All along the side of the road there were tanks labeled "non-potable radiator filling station" and numerous stranded mini-vans. I left LA and my temp gauge was over 100 (granted, I know it reads high in the sun). On that pass it hit 138. Never dropped below 100 until the sun went down and even then it was pegged at 98 until I reached the outskirts of SF. I've never been so hot in my life and I regularly ride bikes for 5+ hours non stop. I was a bit nervous about the van as I sat in traffic going through the pass, but the oil temp gauge held strong and never budged anywhere past normal operating conditions. Holy hell. 6 hour drive took 7.5-8. Two lane highway, every overpass the traffic drops to 30mph. 18 wheelers have a 55mph speed limit and I swear they ride next to each other on purpose. I had made the drive before but must have been different conditions or timing and I didn't realize how horrific it was.

There's one reason I don't live in CA. Glad the van stayed cool. Good to hear you are still using it proper too!

She is living her best life out here. This month alone was LA, the weekend after this one we're off to Sonoma, Downieville the next weekend, then Shasta Lake after. I use it more here since we don't have the equivalent to our NH house to get away too.
It'll be back on track day duty soon enough too.

Whitney is starting her drive out in a couple weeks with the dog, her wagon, and a roof top tent...still don't know how she's going to get the dog into the tent, but she's rather committed at this point. Maybe a long ass folding ramp? Intricate pulley system?

Just needs one of these overland truck wheel cranes!

If she heads over on a northerly route her and carla can crash with us.
