    Starting salary questions

Got some good news today, I got a job! woot! For those of you who don't know I am graduating in a month and this will be my first real salaried job. I have 2 years experience from my co-ops so I'm not a total noob.

My question is how do I know what my starting salary should be? The manager called me today and gave me a number. I completely was not prepared for negotiations and asked him to send me the offer letter. Is it too late for negotiations? Will they be pissed if I call up and ask for more money? I would think no because I havn't found out anything about the benefits, etc.

From my research online the offer seems to be about $5000 short of the average for my field (software engineering) for an entry level. Should I just take the job and after I prove myself try and negotiate more salary? Or should I call up and haggle?

I just don't want to get off on the wrong foot with my manager here. Salary negotiations were easy for co-op cause I could have my agent, err advisor, do it for me!

With the labor market still fairly tight...I suspect getting your foot in the door maybe more important than haggling for another 4-10k of course depeneding on job title.

Best thing to do would be search the typical job postings for your job role and see what the salary range is for each one.

If you think you are going to be the best thing they are going to see, then haggle, or at least ask how long beofre you will see a review, some companies give a 3 month review and a few buck with it.

I had a similar situation with co-ops, I could discuss that with you privately as well..

I would HOPE they are offering you more than I got 5 years ago but things have sucked so bad it wouldn't surprise me...

GREAT sign that you are graduating and have an offer right away though.

Word is that the H1Bs for 2005 and maybe 2006 are all wrapped up already since Congress restricted them... so the companies are going to be whining and complaining about having to hire Americans.

The other thing to keep in mind is if you do well your salary will grow a lot in this field....

Now that I've had a day to sit on it I'm thinking it's a good deal. Thanks for the advice every one.

I'll be moving back to NY soon but will still try and make some NESR events. Especially the track days now that I have a steady income!
