lets talk Juicers / juicing machine

Re: lets talk Juicers / juicing machine

some veggies are pretty high-yield when it comes to juice...apples are definitely one of them!

I always avoided them since I was a kid because I swear they made my mouth itchy so I thought I had an allergy. Juiced = okay.

    I tried this combo today:
    -2 nubs of ginger
    -4 handfuls of blueberries
    -3 whole carrots
    -1 stalk kale
    -1 apple

So instead of mixing with OJ (lots of refined sugar) to counter the spice of the ginger, I tried the apple - and honestly, it does just as good a job!

Starting Wednesday I work 6 days straight, so Tuesday will be my grocery shopping day...more kale, bananas, ginger, blueberries, strawberries...but definitely getting 6 apples this time!

Re: lets talk Juicers / juicing machine

I'm getting used to and committed to juicing ginger root now...I juice it up to 3 times daily. Not sure if it helps with calming the stomach/nausea (I don't have any nausea anyways) and highly doubt it's helping with any body aches and pains (I seem to have them regardless...namely at joints. Exercise/stretching always "helps" the most here)

it's always in combo w' something sweet - apple/carrot/strawberries - to counter the spicy flavor...but I'm kinda getting used to the spice anyhow. I buy 2 of the biggest pieces the grocery store carries, and I'll juice both in a week.

I also tried, for the first time - juicing celery. I'd read (on here?) that's it's a high yield juiced veggie...and it sure is. Seemed to also mask the taste of ginger a bit.

    And I got these:

12 pack was $8 or so...these are mostly for on-the-go. I bring 1 between breakfast/lunch...I seem to get hungry 2-1/2 hours into my shift like clockwork...then again between hour 7 and hour 10. I pack a juice into one and a smoothie into another.

Women...love fresh pressed juices...and they only cost me $1 to make? Cheaper than buying them espresso drinks at starbucks

my roommate has been growing plants and herbs...maybe I can grow and juice my own?

they do...tomorrow I'm working a store that's staffed with all women aged late 20's to early 30's...I'm bringing everyone an easy juice, haha

    easy tasting mixed drink:
    -nub of ginger
    -4-5 strawberries
    -3-4 whole carrots
    -1/2 an apple

    add/remove ginger for spicy taste

weight: I'll be honest, a lot of days I'll have only have 1 slice of toast and eggs for breakfast, then aca'i bowls/juices/smoothies the rest of the day. I get hungry every 2 hours and I'm barely getting any carbs, and my weight doesn't really go down. I've been 148-152lbs for months with all my fat on my stomach/thighs.

energy: not going to make juices/smoothies out to be more than they are. It only helps a little bit....kinda more base line/consistent energy. Definitely not the "surge" you feel with coffee...and me being kinda skinny, I get rampant highs and lows/pretty amped with sugar and carbs...I generally need them in my diet if I don't want a really bad crash. If I try to just uses juices/smoothies the whole day I definitely get sluggish and headaches....so I do both.

Either way, I figure this is good for me in the long run...I will be a juicer/smoothie maker for the rest of my life. I don't take any multivitamins.

work juice drop off was a success...except a couple girls couldn't handle the ginger

ran out of carrots...so to counteract the ginger, I used apples, oranges, and celery

    wasn't bad

Re: lets talk Juicers / juicing machine

I have been running out of time lately in the AM...have been just doing a smoothie of kale/banana/OJ/flax seed... it's my go to. I drink half in the AM, and take the other half in a mason jar to slam during my mid-morning crash. Kale definitely seems to be my energy vitamin...I always feel a little better when I am consistent but not overdoing it.

But guess what I hate to blend, because it gets frothy and clumps often, and doesn't taste so good, but gets a good amount of juice and I enjoy with 1/2 an apple/strawberries/ginger?

    Spinach!

It would always go bad so quickly if I cooked with it, that I stopped buying it...but juicing it is easier, quicker, and tastes better....so that will be cycling in. I am just cautious about the iron content as it can cause upset stomachs, constipation, or hard stools...so a bushel a week in divided doses is good enough for me!

    @tsorfas - do it

Why don’t you tell us more about the high iron content in spinach?

Well...why tell you when I can show you?

Wait...no, that is not the right time to use that line

    Edit: got one!

High iron content: it can be a PITA

    Edit 2: stuff it!

Edit 3: okay, maybe you should not have asked...

It was a smart plan. And it worked like a charm.

In all the Popeye comic strips up to that point, Popeye's superhuman strength was never explained. But with the government's campaign in place, Popeye was suddenly more than willing to share the secret of his strength. Sure enough, soon after Popeye took up spinach, American sales of the mighty vegetable increased.

And why don't you explain to all of us non-medical people the difference in iron content between 100g of spinach vs 100g of kale?

And what the abundance of oxalic acid in uncooked spinach does for the absorption of said iron?

Don't forget that when you blend, the temperature rises and that can denature the enzymes and without enzymes you get toxins and toxins are bad. The interwebs says so.

Don't you work as a medical professional?

    Cliffnotes:

Spinach was thought to have 10x the iron originally thought due to a food scientist misplacing a decimal point back in the day, and nobody ever questioning it.

Also, kale has nearly the amount of iron as spinach per gram, but more iron is absorbed into the human body from kale than spinach due to the high levels of polyphenols (specifically oxalic acid) which inhibits absorption.

Iron content, measured in milligrams per serving:

Breakfast cereals, fortified with 100% of the DV for iron, 1 serving 18
Oysters, eastern, cooked with moist heat, 3 ounces 8
White beans, canned, 1 cup 8
Chocolate, dark, 45%–69% cacao solids, 3 ounces 7
Beef liver, pan fried, 3 ounces 5
Lentils, boiled and drained, cup 3
Spinach, boiled and drained, cup 3
    Tofu, firm, cup 3

And that's with COOKED spinach, which breaks down the oxalic acid, allowing the absorption of the iron in the spinach. Uncooked spinach? Good luck with that.

    Lesson of the day?

May as well just use Tofu in your shake. Better for you. Or Chocolate. Or lentils.

But what do I know? I'm just an IT guy.

Silken tofu then. Get yer protein as well as iron. Firm has twice as much protein by weight if you are willing to blend it more.

With all of that fructose you are ingesting in those shakes, it would put me into a foggy daze of hyperglycemia. Balance it out with some protein and good fats; you may be surprised at how well it works.

I add it onto regular food (ie. Some wheat toast and eggs or fish for breakfast)...I also don't do super high fructose shots alone...the juices and smoothies are just a supplement

    But thanks for the tips!
