The 8 speed GM is known for failures around 100k if kept in urban environments. It seems the constant shifting isn't doing it any favors. All the livery guys are screaming about it. I'm sure more normal usage is a different animal, but it does seem to indicate the design is a little lacking in some areas.

At the end of the day it isn't that bad.. and I say this as a guy who hates automatics and wishes half-tons were offered with a manual.
I think swapping fluid is the right choice for you. ATF maintenance is usually pretty neglected.

Of course I'm also the guy who is going to do an AT drain and fill every oil change now because it was appalling how nasty the stuff was at 30k when I last changed it.

I've been anti GM since I was a 17 year old kid with that shitbox Buick Century I inherited. Car sucked to drive, sucked to own, sucked to work on, and rarely ran. I swore off the entire company and all their products. In ~1999 I drove the S10 before I bought my first Ranger and HATED it. Hated the low seating, way over-baked power steering and grandma interior. Ford was cheaper, faster, nicer to drive, and nicer to sit in.
But here we are some 20 years later and I'm loving something with a bow-tie on the hood. Wouldnta called that one.

The ATF maint is one of many reasons I didn't want an automatic. More shit to take care of.

I consider myself fairly handy with a wrench and have almost no idea how to take care of an AT. Just plain foreign.

YouTube man. There's a few different methods to choose from, but it's basically a fluid swap. How much gets swapped depends on method. If that transmission has a spin on filter, so much the better.

You're easily capable of whatever method you choose.

I'm doing the cooler lines on my 1997 GMC K1500. Whoever did the design is an F**king idiot. The fasteners on the transmission are almost impossible to get to and work on.

Sad to think about seeing my 1971 chevy c10 with a 6.6L big block gets 15 on the highway with 45 year old fuel delivery technology.

The f150 with just 14k on the clock is also suffering from the typical ford gremlins. Pulsating brakes, intermittent electrical issues, and intermittent rough engine idle.
    That's interesting.

I calculated my fuel economy in the 360 on the highway coming back from Loudon and I averaged 10.5mpg at 70ish mph. 15 is impressive.

I've heard that about the brake hard-lines too.

    What's your rpm at 70? Mine are at 1800 at 70. I'm also 2wd vs your 4wd.

I also had a 2004 GMC 2500HD with the 8.1 (496cid) gas and Allison 5spd, I was getting 15.5 on the highway running back and forth to Maine.

No clue. I'll let you know when I put a tach back in it haha.

    Didn't think about the 2wd vs 4wd.

Went shopping this weekend. Looked at Silverado, Ram, and Tundra. Pick up the Tundra this week. Many things went into the thought process in choosing but it really came down to feel of the vehicle and expected longevity of the truck as a whole.

What were your thoughts on the Ram VS Tundra? I'd love another Ram, but feel like I'd have to bathe it weekly in anything that would keep it from rusting out, after my experience with my last one.

    Re: Let's talk trucks

The main thing that kept me away from the Ram was just that, rust on the frame. At 2-3 years old, many I looked at were pretty scarred up already. And honestly, the 8-spd transmission in a vehicle that doesn't have a great track record for transmissions kind of put a little fear into me as well. They are strong pulling trucks no doubt, solid, great smooth and quiet ride. If those two things weren't an issue, I probably would have went Ram. But I do occasionally haul a decent amount and while the ratings are similar, the Ram felt much softer. I think the Tundra will haul a better load.

Well obviously haha... was more curious as to the comparison that lead to that decision beyond what was stated. I like pretty much everything about the Rams minus the loss of value and rust issues. I don't have much of an opinion on the Tundras other than they hold value better and people seem to like them a lot, but they cost more (from my limited research).

    Re: Let's talk trucks

It's kind of funny, the guy that had this one traded it in on a Ram. But he went to a 2500, which is odd because it doesn't look like he every hauled anything in this one, tow hitch is pretty pristine as well.

The Tundras definitely hold their value. I could have bought a new Chevy, comparable equipment, for the a few bucks more than I paid used, but it is Chevy truck month, they are liquidating those things. I looked at 5 Tundras before I bought this one. One was just beat, felt bad for it, the other 4 were sold before I could get there. Decently equipped and priced, they don't last long. But they only make something like 15% of what Ford does, so there aren't a lot out there. People who buy them tend to keep them.

    Re: Let's talk trucks

ive been shopping a TRD Taco and a TRD tundra the past couple weeks. doesnt look like the numbers are gonna work for me at this time so i may just end up buying my leased taco when its up. not enough equity in it to offset the price increase of an upgrade to keep payments similar.
drove a Pro Taco with a 6 speed. it rode nice. cant really justify the price tag though. you really have to want one just to have one for that kind of money.

    $42k ish.
you can get a TRD tundra double cab 4x4 for that.

youre paying for exclusivity more than anything. (only 2000 Pros made). aside from the fox suspension, everything you get with it is cosmetic.
i had some nit picks about it too:
-no "exclusive" interior other than the leather and TRD PRO in the headrests. the dashboard is exactly the same as every other Tacoma. some gauge faces that are specific to Pro models wouldve been a nice touch. maybe a different color with "TRD PRO" on them
-they couldve done a color matched dashboard
    -no power seats...seriously?
    -seats heated but not cooled
-6 speed is cool, but you lose the Crawl control

i know it sounds like im just finding stuff to bitch about but when the price tag is $5-10k over the other models you shouldnt have to convince yourself to buy it over a regular TRD. its looks awesome, but im not sure thats enough. maybe if it had a supercharger i would change my opinion.

What is a shock kit aftermarket? I’d think $2-4000 would get you some good stuff.

    Re: Let's talk trucks

The Tundra I got has the TRD package, the truck I really wanted that I missed by a couple hours didn't have the TRD package. The non-TRD trucks imo ride better, at least in the Tundra landscape. But most come with the off road TRD pack for some reason, I guess that sticker is a hell of a marketing tool. I'm not aware of many offroad venues in the area suited for a 6000# wide body truck. I guess I can continue to go through the mulch bed at Starbucks to jump line.

    Re: Let's talk trucks

Just asked my 2015 Silverado 4WD Ex-cab, 5.3L V8 6AT to drag myself, a friend, probably a couple hundred lbs in gear and two dirt bikes about 1700 miles to West Virginia and back for a week of debauchery in the woods. As always, truck was quiet, comfortable, and did everything asked of it. The following is not purely scientific because I started and stopped the trip-ometer at my house, yet started and stopped collecting pump receipts after picking up and dropping off Joel. But the dash computer showed 1746 miles x 18.6 MPGs. Pump receipts & odometer show 1676 miles, 93.403 gallons for an overall average for the trip of 17.94 MPG.. something like 3% off the dash reading. Mind you I was seeing low 20's on the back roads headed to/from my house to Joels. $0.138/mile in fuel costs for the trip. Not too shabby.

Having bikes poking their heads up over the cab screws with the aero and hurts my economy. We also rolled at 75 MPH a lot with the 70 MPH zones down south. I normally keep it to not more than 70 on my daily commuting round here.

I really like this truck. Works well. Can easily recommend.
