    Pfft, I have to trudge through 2 miles of 4' deep hard packed loose granular slushy ice while fighting hoards of rabid drunk ninja yetis to get to my house. 4WD with locking diffs and snow tires can only get you past the flaming arrows and pools of acidic used Rotella. Once you hit turn 4, well, you're on your own...

    I always thought there was a need for 4wd, until the company bought me a 2wd truck. My driveway is 2600í, and 1000í of it is 12% grade, water bars for erosion control, and I make it out in 2wd. I admit, I drop an 800lb block of steel in the bed for the winter, but I get out.

    All season, whatever came on the truck from the factory.

    There was one time I couldnít get up the hill, and 4wd with snows or whatever, wouldnít have made a difference, it was glare ice from a freezing rain storm.

    not sure why you think tires wouldn't make a difference, quarter mile and longer hills at 12%+ are common around in my neck of the woods. a set of studded Hakks makes easy work of it. Hell I've been out on my bike on icy roads I couldn't even stand up and walk on.... been over the Kanc in freezing rain on one of my StupidBowl Sunday rides

    anyone that thinks tires don't make a difference hasn't used em

    Itís not that they donít make a difference, itís that for 99% of people they arenít necessary. Most of us also realize riding street bikes through the winter isnít necessary.

    I understand that, my comment was aimed specifically at R7's post that they wouldn't make a difference in his 1000 feet of 12% on glare ice
