    Re: Let's talk trucks

if "mini trucks" were still popular then i could see a ford ranger with the new ecoboost 4cyl in it getting over 30mpgs.
realistically, most compact or midsize cars have engines that make decent power and get gas mileage around 30 that would be more than adequate for a "mini truck".
problem is no one really buys them anymore. give it another 15 years and they will make a comeback

Close to 30 on a gasser is possible, but I doubt it would get all the way there. For comparison, the Transit Connect with the 2.5L NA 4 banger or the ecoboost both are rated at 28 mpg highway. I'm no wind tunnel expert but I would think the TC is a bit more aerodynamic than a truck and the truck would probably be a similar weight.

TC is FWD. It is going to be lighter and more efficient than the live axle, body on frame pickups Randy is on about.

But overall, yes, I believe the van/wagon body is going to be more aerodynamic.

The Ranger and associated minis are dead in the US for a really good reason: they were not profitable.
Any upgrade you ever saw the Ranger get after 1990 was because the Explorer got that upgrade a year or two beforehand. Once Ford forked those models, the Ranger was as good as dead.

But anyway. OP: Buy that obnoxiously great S/C'ed Raptor. Dooo eiiit.

Aerodynamics are a bitch! My car gets 32 mpg average on my commute and I am not gentle on it. I put a bike rack on the roof and lost almost 5 mpg! If I tow my home made landscape style trailer I get 24 mpg with the car.

tonneau cover on bed goes a long way to improve a trucks aerodynamics

best mileage is not highway, rather lower speed rural driving (98% of my driving) where aerodynamics doesn't make much difference anyway

Consumer Reports recently tested that and found the the cover did not help. See: Pickup Truck Tailgates | Fuel Economy - Consumer Reports News

I don't know if that's true. I've seen multiple tests that show an open bed and closed tailgate is better aerodynamically. The closed tailgate catches a "ball" of air and the positive pressure smooths the flow of air over the cab and back over the rear of the truck. Capping the bed or leaving the tailgate open makes turbulence which pulls the air from the cab down and causes drag.

I don't care what consumer reports says, worrying about a tonneau cover for gas mileage on a lifted, 35" tire, supercharged, 6.2L that gets 12 MPG stock sounds an awful lot like pissing into the wind to me.

edit: and remember, with the blower, that will be need to be high test, at 8 mpg or whatever it is.....
