My neighbor had his entire 2.7 replaced under warranty due to the turbos failing. 13k miles on it.

Owned two smog controlled diesels and will never buy another. Ever.
Not quite up to the weight, but this boat is around 6,000 lbs and in the airstream. Sprinter 2500 (2.7L diesel) is rated for 5,000 lbs in the US - and 7,700 everywhere else. This trailer has disc brakes with electronic controller.
Topped off fuel before and after to get actual mpg. This van gets 22 to a max of 26 cruising around mostly highway. Towing this trailer at 65 (it was 95°), we got 18. Which is amazing. Towing this trailer with a 5.3 Tahoe was 11-13.

Tough to beat that! And I agree, no more emissions diesels for me. And I'm not deleting them and then dealing with that nightmare.
That boat is still pretty aerodynamic compared to an RV though. That helps.

Part of me wonders if they're starting to sort out the tech better now. Gas engines in the 70s were pretty shitty when they first got strangled by emissions, diesels may be similar now that they have a decade under their belt. I dunno. Emotionally I still want a diesel because they're awesome, but new ones scare me and it's pretty difficult to make a financial case for one unless you actually need it.

I belong to quite a few camping groups on Facebook and even forums and still see enough horror stories of diesels derating from emissions problems to still steer me clear of them. Hopefully they'll iron it out soon enough or maybe they'll disappear like the CAT engine in big trucks had to.
Jeff
And to be clear, I'm not a diesel hater at all. I owned a 96 Dodge with the Cummins, and it was the best truck/engine I've ever owned. I sold it in 2010 because chasing rust was getting old. By then diesel technology was horrible and I just never got that warm fuzzy feeling from them again.

I hear ya. I drool over the newer ones every now and then but I'm not really well versed on them.
Mine's a 2006 and I'm beginning think total restoration is cheaper then replacing it with anything right now. I don't want to give it up but I really don't want to replace it with anything either.
Edit: The CAT thing is interesting. That seems like a big market to abandon, but I don't really know shit about that industry.

I would have loved to restore my 96 but I bought it when I was young and got a regular cab that became too small with a wife and two dogs. If it was the crew cab I would have just dealt with the two doors and done a full restoration.

A friend has the ZR2 Colorado with the 2.8 turbo diesel and it's insane. Only 180HP, but 370 lb-ft tourque. He's got a few years on it now and is absolutely smitten with it. He has a similar commute to mine and CLAIMS to get about 20MPG on average. Can barely hear the thing running and as fucked up as it sounds, it actually smells like a bleach/ammonia blend if you stand next to the exhaust it while it's idling. He swears by it.
...that's all I got to say about that...
Did you grit your teeth and try to look like Clint Fuckin' Eastwood?
Or did you lisp it all hangfisted like a fuckin' flower?
If you are towing, manuals need note apply: tow ratings are much lower in most cases.
First guy to look at my WRX was 28, thought the clutch was too heavy.
Second guy was 25, no test drive because he couldn’t drive a manual.
So you are correct: it is an age thing. Most 20 somethings have never driven a manual and the ever-diminishing availability makes change unlikely.

The cocksucker who hit my daughter at 35mph without touching the brakes was middle-aged.
We have a rear view camera. First thing he did was reach down and pick up the phone. Then he got out of the car, hunched over, holding his back. Then he looked around and realized he was the cause of the accident. Straightened right up and walked to the curb. Welcome to Dorchester.

Just read the new Raptor has a 5-link rear suspension, looks like the engineers at Ford finally listened to me. Before it was on the “never own” list, now it may be at the top of my new truck list.
I went to MMI I know what Im doing here chief
Was i the only one that was not blown away by the new raptor intro. other than the new coil set up out back it seemed really meh. And it looks like hot garbage. 2nd gen raptors really nailed it in the looks dept. Hopefully im wrong and people love the new one and then the current gen price drops and i can actually afford one.
The coil sprung 5-link is the biggest improvement the Raptor has ever received...

Rear suspension is nice, dont really like the exterior, interior is nice, disappointed it doesnt have the power boost, 37s as an option stock is crazy, "the most connected truck ever" is something I would NOT want.
