Stay: hacienda del sol (really cool b&b)
    Eat: orlandos & doc martens
Also, ask the locals how to get to the hot springs.

I love northern nm. One of my favoritest places on this green earth.

Just got back from a ski trip and hit there for a day but stayed in Los Alamos so I have no input as far as that stuff goes. If you're skiing bring your balls!

Hacienda del Sol looks pretty good - thanks. I've reached out to them for availability. I assume this is in the town as opposed to near the mountain?

It's in town, but if my memory is correct, it's not too far from where the road that goes UP comes out on that main drag.

Taos is one steep mountain. Red River looked like a awesome ski town. Taos Plaza was cool but touristy.

Taos is beautiful. I assume you're a skier. I'm not and find ski bums super obnoxious, so that was the only negative of the place in my book. It's filled with rich white douches who are constantly talking about how poor they are. Oh wait, that's because they are devoting their lives to skiing instead of working... But really, the whole area is beautiful and there's lots to do if you like food and the outdoors.

wow - lot of bitterness there! Yes, I am a skier, and I aspire to be both a ski bum and a rich white douche.

Heh, no bitterness. I was there visiting my best friend who was living the ski bum life. It just gets old hearing people complain about how they have no money because they have chosen to make their hobby their whole life. It's cool if you want to do that, just don't cry about being poor all the time.

Hmmm. I live on ski area land in a camper and I haven't bought a lift ticket in four years and I eat crock pot food. My email is fireskibum@###.com. I better get a job.

I lived in NM for almost 7 years. My advice, try both the red and the green. They change every year and the flavor and heat are always different. Get a New Mexican chili relleno. Fuck poblano peppers.

Taos proper is not very far from the mountain base. PS drink lots of water, altitude is no joke.

There is some serious Big Boy terrain out here. Today was 48 and not a cloud in the sky - perfect Spring conditions. Food is awesome, Hacienda del Sol not so much!

It's all good since it's just me. The keeper is cool and the breakfast was good, but the room is meh. Definitely wouldn't stay here with the Mrs. Did get into Orlando's (it was packed last night) and the food did not disappoint. People were told the wait would be an hour and they were all "OK, we'll be out by the fire, send margaritas." If my legs are up for it tomorrow I'll be heading for the steeps.

Hike up and hit the ridge to the left if the chutes have thin cover. I wouldn't touch them when I was there a few weeks ago.

Kachina lift was closed when I was there.

That's where I'm headed today, though I don't know that I am acclimated enough to the altitude to hike (I'm an old timer )! Kachina is open so that's where I'll be once the sun has softened it up. Gonna need stronger sun screen though - the sun ate up my spf 30!

    Re: Taos NM?

The hike to the front side chutes and the bowl that has Juarez on it really isn't that bad if you take it slow, but since Kachina is open I say hit that. It looked awesome.
