Thinking about getting a new family truckster...

I'm toying with the idea of either trading my 99 chevy 2500 in for a new vehicle for my wife..

this issue is that i am spending 70-100 a week on gas in my truck and my wife is driving around in a 96 purple prism with 160k on it, our son is due to arrive on the 22nd of this month.

The 70-100 on gas plus the wear and tear on my truck is getting expensive and i forsee a lot of cash to be dumped into it in the near future...probably $1-2k worth and i'm not thrilled that my wife is going to be driving our newborn around in the prism...

i see to options...1. trading teh truck in for a family car, taking the prism. 2. buying a $2k(ish) commuter car and leaving her in the prism.

the prism runs like new, my wife has had it for a long time and is very good at getting the maint. done..it runs like new and should last several more years....

i am leaning towards a new car and here are my "needs":

awd or 4x4 - this is mainly because of our driveway...it is sloped very steep with concrete walls on both sides...and of course much easier for my wife to get around in

big enough for me to ride in for 4-5 hours, hold all of our stuff and be able to pull a trailer with 2 bikes

    cheap

    good on gas

I'm wondering people opinions on what cars i should look at and if i should just get a beater for myself...

For new vehicles i am leaning towards the Honda element and the Jeep patriot...opinions please

    Red -
Have you thought about the new Liberty? I'm not sure how they are on gas though.

Not to mention that a prism is going to be hard to cart around stroller, car seat, diaper bag, toys, groceries, purse, jackets, etc. etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., and etc.

The Honda element is a sweet ride, especially with AWD. Honda reliability, and legendary handling in the snow.

Of course, you should really get her this:

How about a used Subaru? They are AWD

You should get your wife one of those.

You should get an old V6 F150 or a Toyota 4 banger.

Re: Thinking about getting a new family truckster...

The element was my last car, It is definitly a good car But the gas mileage is not its all cracked up to be, Very weak for a four banger. A straight up non-sport Legacy wagon might be better

I hate to be the one to mention the M word (mini-van). But they are available in AWD, get decent milage, haul piles of crap. Plenty of used lease returns available.

Highsiders VW wagon would be a good option to look at as well. My neighbor owns a twin to it and it is an absolute tank in the snow.

If I were you I would check out the Ford Edge. I like em. But they are a little pricey. You may be able to get low financing or something from Ford though.

ok i think the field has been narrowed to:

    Jeep Patriot
    Honda Element
    Ford Escape
    Chevy HHR(even though no awd)

I don't know how you feel about KIA, but we got the Sorento and my wife loves it. 4wd, power everything. Lots of room. Might be worth a check. My wife wouldn't trade it for anything.

bump...I also have a truck now, and see myself trading it in/selling it to get the family econobox down the road, so I'm interested to see where this goes

how about a double cab tacoma?

it's too bad the US doesn't get the diesel, double cab toyota hillux for 30mpg and plenty of torque to tow...

Try a Chevy trailblazer , plenty of power , lots of room We have one and I,m comfortable in it I'm 6'4" we tow a pop up 12 ' camper and it dosn't even know it's behind it. Plus out on the highway on our trip to Fla. we got between 22 and24.4 mpg, around town it averages 17-20 not real bad for a mid sized suvgo for the 6 cyl model

Go with the Honda. My boss picked up a Ridgeline, the F-350 was a bit much in gas for what he did. He couldn't be happier. He has a driveway with a bad angle to it. One of the last snow storms he tried to get it stuck in his drive and couldn't. He is very impressed wit it to say the least. I believe the Honda Element rides on the same chassis. Give it a test ride.

what about a Nitro or a Caliber. both can come in AWD. the Nitro has LOTS of options and can 5000#. not sure what the Caliber can tow sice the "big" engine is a 2.4 4cyl while the Nitro comes with a 4.0.....i think you can get it supercharged too

Re: Thinking about getting a new family truckster...

    Red,

My wife and I were in the same position when our first came. We got the Explorer you've seen. The thing's not the greatest on gas (no shit) but I can tell you this...they are a dime a dozen and you can get a used one for mega cheap. AWD and a good tank for mama and baby. V8 is solid (check years, maybe Consumer Reports) and gets the same damn gas mileage as the V6 (I had one before this one). We've been looking at the Subarus and two of our neighbors just bought new Outbacks...and they've been bitchin hard about the gas mileage. Not sure if they actually do suck or people go in buying them thinking they'll get some crazy numbers vs. someone who buys a truck and knows what they're getting into.

    Good luck.

    ...in the meantime...how bout this??

Re: Thinking about getting a new family truckster...

If you are buying new, check out the RAV4 with 4cyl and 4wd. It is very roomy and actually does get close to 30mpg on the highway. It can tow 2 bikes without too much problem - if you plan on towing more then 2000 lbs then get the V-6 which can tow 3500lbs and still gets 28mpg on the highway. The element is too boxy which kills its fuel economy and performance. The CRV is too feminine looking (get it for your wife). Oh, and I agree with Mongoose441, you drive the prizm and give her and the new baby the newer/safer car. That's what I do (my wife drives a Passat wagon FWD with 4 snow tires).
Btw, congrats in advance on the new addition!
