No Cumins in a van. The Sprinter is a Mercedes product that Dodge slapped their name on a for a few years. You can still buy them under the Mercedes nameplate again. Those vans and the Ram pickup are totally different animals.

I think the Sprinter vans are pretty cool actually unless you tow heavy. They are maintenance nightmares though and will nickle and dime you to death, especially as they age. Everyone I know who has one has horror stories. They're not worth the money, IMO.

Thanks for the info. I am mainly looking for my own vehicle because my dad's truck has no balls. The 4.6 in his F150 just doesn't cut it.

No problem. Sounds like you're stuck on the diesel. The 5.4 is a great motor in it's own right though. My F250 has the V10 and is a brute, but when I drive the van with the 5.4L I'm never really dying for more power. The 5.4 has 350 ft lbs. of torque at 2500 rpm, it pulls from down low.

    The 4.6 is a joke.

The 4.6 really is a joke.

The 5.4 was nice when I towed with it in my uncles e350. Like you said, I just kinda want a diesel.

Ford is introducing the Transit van to replace the Econoline next year. So there will be another choice with a high roofline.

    diesel van FTW!!

even if it does cost you more, the depreciation is way more important than the purchase price...and that diesel will hold value more than your retirement account, you can low ball the guy, pay cash, be a pushy asshole buyer, get that '01 for 2g's less than he's asking, drive it 5 years and sell it for $8,500

    f-yeah

    1. I have not heard of this "head gasket" common problem with the 5.4's

    2. The spark plugs blowing out is extremely exaggerated. It is all from people who did not properly torque the plugs and do not take care of their vehicle.

Meh...aluminum head...5 threads per plug...I'm all set with that. One person mentioned the head gasket thing to me. I didn't see anything about it anywhere else.

You can always pick up a hitch mounted carrier for the dirt bike if you get a van. That's what I use to cart the WR around with my Explorer, works great. Used carriers are around under $100, new ones from $150-$300.

Yeah, I've been lookin at those. Think I'm gonna grab one of those once I swap out my little trailer for an enclosed.

Smutty, if you're worried about van ceiling height & a dirtbike, just use a strap to compress the front end. PK puts his dirtbike in his truck bed with a cap that way.

    Re: Tow Vehicle Questions

So I just got back from putting a deposit on a Van. Ended up it was a small little garage and it was on consignment for a good friend and mechanic of the dealers. This means no dealer cut and no fees as it is now a private sale. Got it for $8700 with mirror extenders and a set of snows mounted on rims. It was listed for $10,600. Has 89k on it.

There is some rust that I will have to take care of, but transmission was rebuilt 20k ago, front end is tight, front brake pads and rotors are new, brake lines are new, rear pads are good, etc. Rust is the major thing I will have to take care of. I'm not afraid of a little rust converter, paint, welding, and undercoating. Thing shifts and rides oh so nice. It's going to be great.

It also comes with a CB radio in it as well as Bilstein gas shocks.

Let me know Pete. I have one that I might sell. I bought it from PK, used once and then bought a pickup truck...

And another question. It still has a loan on it and I will be paying it off and then the title will be shipped to me (we are meeting up at the bank). How long will it take Mass to print the title so I can get a temp plate to drive it back?

It typically takes a week or two after the payoff is received from the bank and they notify the state to release the title before it shows up in a mail box.
