Dislikes whoolies as a matter of impracticality, if I 'member.

Re: driving in Europe...it's awesome. Almost all of the drivers know what they're doing, when they're supposed to do it, and how. Most drive a manual. Even the VW Polo comes standard with a set of handles.

sorry man, I'm in CA...and as others have posted - it's a dedicated natural gas truck (no gasoline)...so not much use in NE unless you buy a pump and fuel at home (used ones ~$700)...the good part is fueling at home brings your cost ~$0.80-$1.00/gallon so it would pay for the pump and truck in 23 months (assuming you drive 1,000 miles/month)...plus I've done long bed (little weight over rear axle) 2wd in MA before and it sucked...like stuck in the snow bank made by the plow truck trying to get out of your driveway, sucked

Quote Originally Posted by nhbubba View Post

Doesn't it have a manual? If so, you'd have to pay someone to take it!
    2wd, long bed, reg-cab = yes

manual = no...it's an auto but 4R100 (which is bitchin)

since this is a truck shopping thread: for those of you looking at 98-03 F-150's: they had a few limited edition "7700" trucks. F250 springs/shocks, extra frame re-inforcement (only F-150 rated for plowing @tsorfas), 7 lug wheels, 10.25" sterling rear differential (most others are 8.8" or 9"), higher pay load/tow ratings, transmission cooling fins, and best of all - 4R100 transmission. This thing is the same one used in F250/F350's of that era and it's rated up to 1,000 horsepower!! So driving a 210hp 5.4L in an F150 is nothin'...this is a tranny that can take it hard!

the hardest sell is reg cab...Mexican will buy $1,500 beater trucks day and night...but all have 2-250 kids which can squish into an ex-cab, but no reg

Says my buddy in western Germany. Says everyone I talked to in our Danish office. Greenies are so in control over there that unless your name is Jonny Walker you simply aren't going to legally ride dirty over there. Some do, but my read is its almost all private land or extra illegal.

Northern parts of Scandinavia may be different.

For whatever it's worth, I never said I didn't like 'em. I have no particular care for those ass hats that shut down major interstates, block traffic to put on their own little mutual masturbation shows that nobody actually gives a fuck about. And I have said I can't wheelie for shit. But I never said I disliked.

    Aaanyhow. Pickup shopping.

a 3 series BMW or Miata are fun with a standard tranny, a truck not so much, automatic transmissions for american trucks have been solid reliable for decades, nothing you can do with standard that you can't do better with an automatic in a truck.

I used to plow snow with a standard, never again

The only thing I find a big benefit from with a stick is towing. Autos still aren't great for picking the right uphill or downhill gear.

The downshift lag/hunt drives me insane. Always makes up its mind and upshifts just before a long hill.
I still believe I can beat any but the new 5288-speed autos by driving a manual sensibly, MPG wise.

I may be looking for something in the near future. Went to get my truck inspected, the frame is cracked. Shop is gonna take a closer look to see if its repairable or not. Also need a new/newer car so I've been thinking about a crossover or pickup.

We still have a lot of Auto trans deniers in my area, buying/selling a standard is easy (unless you're buying new). Conversely, I was just given a standard Ranger.

The Allison in mine does great. It'll downshift (very aggressively if necessary) to maintain speed on descents in tow/haul mode, and does a great job picking gears for ascending.

I imagine larger trucks that are intended to tow frequently do well.

Smaller trucks? Still garbage. Need a lot of finess to do it properly with a small low torque motor.
