Only thing I found tricky with driving a three on the tree back when I had a 1971 chevy c10, was trying to bang the gears while broiling tires. Other than that, it was simple if all the shift rods were maintained and adjusted correctly

First time I ever drove a manual on the street was with a 3 on the tree. For some reason, taxis in Tokyo usually have column shifters and manual transmissions.

The only experience I've had with autos was a early 80's Toyota van. That was a bad auto so they all are.

Drove a 66 Ford pickup with 3 on the tree last night, for the first time. Interesting, but not too bad. Didn't help that the clutch caught about when my knee touched my chin, and no power steering. And a couple beers.

I owned one of those once, it is the reason I will never own a Toyota again, the auto trans was about the only thing I didn't have a problem with. I don't believe they were intended to tow

There is this thing called Grade Logic that Toyota has. It was in my 2005 4R and is also in my 2010 Tundra.

I think it does a good job of keeping up with the road elevation changes when left on its own to decide. Sure, from time to time I might "help" with the gear selection but it's rare. Most of the time I use the manu-shift feature for is to lock out 5th or 6th because of lower speeds and/ or elevation changes.
