    Wagon/Crossover/4 Door Sedan - Shopping/Research

well here is my second car shopping thread...i'm hoping to be able to stagger having 2 car payments at the same time by a little while and run my legacy a little longer (other car shopping thread below)...but i figure i should do some research in case something major goes sideways in my legacy with 190k miles...for myself i would like to have a little more trunk space than i currently have which is why i would consider wagons and crossovers in addition to sedans but i have no problem sticking with a sedan...at the moment i would probably go new with the used car prices being the way they are but used is still an option...with the oil consumption issues i have in my legacy i may end up staying away from subaru, although i do like the outback (my mom has a 2011 outback)...with the cvt issues my wife had with her nissan i'd like to stay away from vehicles with a cvt transmission...the car companies i tend to lean towards are toyota, honda and mazda as i or family has had good luck with them...volvo has some nice wagons but they are too expensive for me...

    Midsize SUV Shopping/Research

    needs:
    -reliability
    -60/40 folding second row
    -pleather/leather (because dogs)
-be able to fit in the garage have about 18’ of space would like to have 2’-3’ of that to walk around the front or back of an suv and her car is 15.9’ long and 6.1’ wide (may have to rearrange some things in the garage to make more room)
    -awd or fwd
    -not a cvt transmission
    -would like 30+ mpg
    -smaller wheels with more tire
    -splash guards
-all weather floor mats and trunk tray

    wants:
    -dual driver memory settings
    -dual bluetooth phone connections
    -window rain guards

list at the moment (will edit this post as i gather info):

i left some manufacturers off that i don't consider options either due to cost or reliability but let me know if you think i forgot any...(left out: Land Rover, Volvo, bmw, Mercedes, Audi, Cadillac, dodge, Infiniti, jeep, Lincoln, vw & Mitsubishi)

    1 sedans
-mazda 6 touring (memory seat available on grand touring reserve and up, discontinued for 2022)
    -toyota camry (no seat memory)
-toyota camry hybrid se (no seat memory)
-honda insight hybrid touring (no seat memory)
-honda accord hybrid ex-l (has memory seat)
    -kia k5

    2 everything else
    -buick tourx
    -toyota venza
-hyundai santa cruz (2022 model, untested decent fuel mileage, interested but unsure, i assume this is a santa fe with the rear chopped off, reminds me of the subaru baja)
-ford maverick hybrid (same reasons as the santa cruz above, also not really sure about ford reliability and it's a new model)
    -hyundai Tucson hybrid
    -hyundai Santa Fe hybrid
    -kia sorento hybrid (3 row)
    -honda crv hybrid
    -toyota rav 4 hybrid
    -toyota tacoma hybrid (coming 2023)

Any reason a hatchback won't work?

I'm thinking a Mazda 3 AWD Turbo hatchback model would be pretty sweet. Or maybe a GTI? Heck even the Corolla hatchback with a stick looks pretty nice.

little too small inside and not enough depth/width in the trunk...wife, a 4 year old and 2 dogs (65 pounds and 80 pounds) plus i usually have a bunch of work stuff in my trunk that stays in there...i would like to go back to a smaller vehicle but my last 2 cars have been mid size automatic sedans (05 mazda 6 and 13 subaru legacy)...way before that was an 87 honda civic and a 99 honda civic (both manuals)...i don't think i can go back smaller cause it makes things more inconvenient/cramped and unless my commute gets shorter or a different route i won't be owning another manual which is why i would like some type of crossover or wagon to keep to a car feeling ride and gas mileage but just add some trunk space...but i just don't see much fits my needs in my price range

Mazda 6 or Camry would be the two I'd keep on that list if it were mine.

Emotionally I'd lean towards the Mazda, fiscally I'd lean towards the Camry.

i've owned a 6 before and had great luck with it...also can't go wrong with a camry...they are at the top of my list cause those 2 are the most realistic choices for me...the accord is ruled out just due to the cvt

RWD is why I would put it tops on my list

Why rule out the hybrid? I've been super happy with mine. The 6 seems to blend the best of both worlds.

If it's priced right it could be an amazing car.

not really looking at hybrids cause they are typically more expensive than the gas versions and more electronics can mean more issues and harder for a local mechanic to work on...i guess i could be swayed though...also pretty set on getting fwd or awd...don't need a sports car just something that will do the job well and require very little repair/maintenance...all my cars have been fwd or awd and i like how they handle in the snow...the legacy was great in the snow, use the paddle "shifters" to slow the car down all the time...also not sure my car will make it till the end of 2022

No reason to be scared of quality hybrids at this point. If you drive a bunch the extra expense is covered extremely quick in fuel savings.

I'm the opposite on the RWD thing. I'd rather throw some nice snow tires on and enjoy the RWD dynamic all year long. If I can get RWD in an economical package that does job vs FWD I'm choosing RWD every time. Sadly, the current RWD offerings always require more care and feeding. The Mazda has the potential to change that.

i could probably go hybrid depending on price difference as i do drive a lot but i won't be going rwd...yea rwd offerings are going down as well as manual offerings...i believe the camry hybrid has a cvt though

Yes and no. It's an eCVT which mimics one but is not the belt or pulley style most people think of when they hear CVT and the associated horror stories.

They're constant mesh planetary gear sets and basically bullet proof. Toyota hybrid transmissions are known to last the lifetime of the car. 300k plus is the norm. A transmission failure with them is the outlier.

Not sure. Those were unobtanium when I started looking so I didn't bother researching them heavily.

The Mazda 6 has been discontinued for 2022 FWIW. The RWD replacement is only a rumor right now.

I'm tempted to recommend the VW Alltrack, we're pretty happy with ours, but 1. they stopped making them in 2020 and 2. they are not much larger than the base Golf. Getting a baby seat in is a chore unto itself, nevermind adding 2 60+lb dogs into the mix. It is decently spacious in the trunk though, and somewhat fun to drive.

The Buick Regal TourX looks great for a wagon, I've wanted one since they announced it. Much larger than an Alltrack, and more powerful. If you can find one you should definitely try it out.

Rav4 Prime is the same size as a regular Rav4. But it has a combined 302 horsepower. For slightly bigger, but slower you could consider a Venza.

I've also personally had my eye on the turbo Mazda6 2018+. It'd be a nice upgrade to my Mazda3.

Isn't the Rav4 Prime Toyota's 2nd fastest vehicle (0-60) only behind the Supra? I'd take a hard look at that for the performance/economy.

Plus there are federal and MA credits/rebates on the Prime vehicles which makes them extremely price competitive. Win all around.

that alltrack looks nice but probably a little small...the tourx is hard to find

i guess i'd have to take a look at the cargo area in a rav 4 to see if it would work for me...rav 4 says it has more cargo capacity than the new venza...that prime version is expensive $10k more than the hybrid version

tempting but expensive...hoping to stay under $30k

Something to keep in mind with the tax rebates is that if you typically get a refund you would want to game the withholding during the year so you "owe" taxes end of year instead.

Prius V = Prius wagon. Has a CVT but they don’t seem to be a problem. Never heard of them until a friend bought one. Took the badges off the rear deck.
