I know nothing about grills. After this thread I've briefly started looking into it and that's kind of what I settled on as well. I'd just like one used not at full value honestly.

NG just doesn't make sense for grilling, to me, you hook it up, and you're stuck with that location

Agreed - in the winter, when the patio furniture is put away I roll the grill in front of the slider so I am outside for the least amount of time possible.

Well I expect the advantage is you never have to go get propane. It just works. All the time.

I considered this when I lived in a house that had natural gas.

I had considered it too... Our deck is right next to our NG line. Seemed easier to just pick up a 2nd propane cylinder and keep the location flexibility.
I always have a full cylinder on deck and have found that there's way more fuel left in the "in use" cylinder than I would have imagined. Like 5-6 more nights worth of cooking compared to when I would have gotten a fill (to be safe) in a 1-cylinder scenario.

Just don't forget to turn the grill off. If I did, I would have one of those timer gas valves.

It'd be awesome if you could explain to my wife how that's pretty much the same as opening all of the windows and leaving the heat turned up. :-)

Fair point. With a propane set up you only use the bottle when you do that.

i agree...i just have 1 in use tank and 1 on deck tank...when i empty 1 i just swap them and go fill the empty one at the garden stand 5 minutes away...i have a grill with wheels for a reason...i roll it out of the garage into the driveway when i want to use it and back in afterwards so i don't have to cover it outside...that way it will last longer and i won't have to replace parts for a longer amount of time...but everyone's situation is different...i like having flexibility in case i want to have it in the yard in the shade for a cookout instead of needing to set up an easy up

It's no Weber but this thread made me want to fix my old grill until I find a replacement

The old unit flame was a mess of hot spot and dead spots. Now it's back to normal operation

Re: Are Weber Grills really the shit ?

This thread cost me some money. Just bought a new Weber Spirit 3 burner grill. It's nice.

Had a box-store special I bought when I bought this house and was house poor about a decade ago. It was okay when new, but quickly turned into a piece of shit. Fire box is supposedly all stainless, yet somehow the bottom has rusted out. Grill plates are disgusting (lack of proper care from me). The burner covers are all rusted out. One of the wheels broke. The cover is all UV rotted. The drip pan design was stupid and thus rarely cleaned. When clean it was just a collection of hot spots. Last summer I had a half controlled grease fire every time I tried to grill anything. And I only dared use one half or give the kids tetanus.

So I bought a fancy new grill. Gotta say this thing gets hot. Instructions say you should run on high for 10 minutes to get up to 500-F before cooking. 5 minutes in she's pegged at over 600. Threw some burgers on last night and hot damn they seared nice. Caught me off guard as I am used to having undercooked burgers after 10 minutes. 4 minutes per side and they were cooked all the way through. My English, ex-vegetarian wife loved them.

Steel frame feels cheap and slightly under-built. Assembly took about an hour. Paint is amazing; nicest paint I've ever seen on a mass produced thing. Wheels are possibly even more chinzy than the box-store special that replaced it.

No side burner as I never used the side burner on the old unit and it was a pile of green to step up. We keep a camp stove for emergency use.

Now I need to set a paver slab to park it on. Feeling full on dad-mode.

Oh. I got the E-310, spirit II model. I don't know what the difference is. I think the one with the side burner was a 335 or something.
Mine is the cheapest black painted lid model, not the stainless model.

It is burger night. About to spark it up shortly.

Overcooked burgers again. Great sear, but grey all through. Fortunately still juicy, not dried out.
I think it is just too blimin' hot. Need to reduce heat even further after pre-heat.

Re: Are Weber Grills really the shit ?

I haven't really sifted through the thread. But my dad got 20 or so years from his previous Weber. I know because we bought it for him. We finally replaced it for him a couple years ago.

Napoleon has been making big waves in the higher end grills recently too. Yes, the same Napoleon that produces wood/pellet stoves. Which, by the way are awesome.
