    Re: Webhosting

i bought my domain from godaddy. $8/year. I use GMAIL to host my domain name for IMAP email, so I didnt have to setup exchange at home. I havent built a page yet, but it's on my 'do to' list, as well as Streaming Media services. I'm running 2003 R2 server on an old Compaq desktop (2.0 Ghz P4 400Mhz bus, 512MB DDR333 RAM)

    Re: Webhosting

Ok, so get the domain from godaddy, but then what do Ineed to do to get it on the internet? (Aside from building the webpage) Like buy space on a server? I have no idea about any of this.

    Re: Webhosting

correct me if i'm wrong someone, but i think you can host using XP Pro, and dont need 2003 server. you'd need IIS installed on your PC, which windows update should take care of anyways. you'd build your HTML page with whatever tool you prefer (notepad, Front Page, .NET, Macromedia, etc) and dump it in your c:\inetpub\wwwroot folder as well as any images and subpages. Will need to port forward port 80 on your router to your desktop. might want to assign your desktop a static IP to avoid DHCP on your router changing your IP.

    Re: Webhosting

once you set it up though, it's easy. just take the HTML pages, images, etc into a folder that IIS creates. then deal with the port forwarding and assigning a static IP on your network card.
you could send your HTML pages and have someone host it for you, but that's kinda pointless if you set up the pages

I use dreamhost. It's pretty cheap, and you don't have to bother with your own server.

Go daddy is pretty easy. They host the site as well. No forum though
