My dad told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. So I became an Asshole.

Going through the dash on the new van

God damn mice, this van had the smallest infestation of these ruthless critters I have encountered.

Replaced all of the pop top seals and dealt with some small rust patches under the front luggage bin.

Date of Manuf. is still stamped on the top

There are a few east entry points for mice on the vanagons, battery vents and the front heater box primarily. Both can be closed off by using screens and stainless steel wool for the battery vents.

Looks like they still have the stock springs on there, or haven't tried to level it. Westy leanning hard.

Even the 2wd vans are tanks in snow

Re: Wesfalia or Similar Conversion Van

Been crushing miles this winter. Have had two small setbacks, one was a wheelbearing/hub failure and now its been down for about a week with a no start situation.

The 2wd vans have the speedo cable running off the drivers side wheel hub. The cable runs through the hub and the end locks into the grease cap with a circlip. The entry point on the back of the hub has a grommet. My grommet had worked up the cable and let in all sorts of sand and salt/water. I rotated my tires a week before I had a complete bearing failure and there was no play in the hub at the time. The hub was filled with sand and the bearings were shot.

    Wheel hub

Then last week I had a no start situation, starter would crank and motor would turn over. I had compression fuel and spark but not start. Motor would bump start but then die. After replacing and testing everything engine wise I pulled my starter apart. It was filled with sand and rusted to all hell. This starter was new as of last summer. Putting everything back together now and hopefully this will be the cure to the no start.

Bummer. Wonder why it would quit after a bump?

Re: Wesfalia or Similar Conversion Van

My guess is the motor hasn't been getting the amount of power it needs from the battery due to the starter connection. The brushes were all sorts of jammed up in there.

Have you ever considered taking your van to an exorcist?

A whole lot got done in the last month. Stripped the interior to reinsulate everything. Lizard skin, paint, fatmat, then poly iso panels cut to fit and filled all the body panels. No more highway drone and at 80mph I can now have a conversation and hear, the stereo also doesn't need to be cranked anymore.
