What's heavier, larger OD rims, or taller tire sidewall?

I'm putting together a new set of wheels for my truck and would prefer to keep them as light as possible. Assuming the OD and width of the tire are the same, which is heavier; a bigger rim (and therefore shorter sidewall), or a smaller rim (with a larger sidewall)? Talking about aluminum rims, in this case.

Trying to decide between 17's and 18's. I'd prefer 17's for the bigger sidewall (it does go off road occasionally), but if there is a big weight penalty, I'll probably go 18's in an effort to squeeze every mpg I can.

heavier also gives you more unsuspended weight, negatively affecting the handling

Yup... in general larger wheels and shorter sidewall will be heavier. There are the rare occasion where you're getting a highly engineered wheel or exotic materials to make it lighter but those would both be big dollars and you'd know the weights_

FWIW just researched this for a Tahoe.

Stock 20” alloy is 38 lbs, Tire 39 lbs, total 77 lbs.

Stock Z71 18” rims are 31.8 lbs, OEM Tire is 35 lbs, total 67.

Steel 18” are 40, so total 75 lbs.

Rolling diameter is less than 1% different.

Stuck with 17’s on the WRX because the forged rally wheels are 15.5 lbs compared to 18 for a good cast aluminum and 21 for stock rims. Makes a surprising difference.
