Who's in Lawrence? Anybody need help?

I know that if you're in the area and having an emergency related to the explosions that you wouldn't be posting here.

Let's be proactive - post up with any info on people in need, contact info, and offers to help.

    I'll go first:

dontpanic, Danvers, MA: I can put up a couple of people for a couple of days.

Just left Lawrence General at like 5:30 after back surgery yesterday, get "kicked" out of my room a little early because they needed rooms to clear out the ER to get ready to respond. Crazy situation for sure. If anyone on here is affected, I wish you the best.

    +1

NHBubba: ~45 minutes from Lawrence. I have a lovely junk guest room and a 4 year old that would love to ask you about your life story.

    ^ Awesome!

Fuck you got lucky, that was right after it all started to go down. I heard Lawrence General was at capacity soon after.

In Andover here, if folks don't want to travel far but it's probably not much better unless you're in the middle of the war zone. No power but no gas on the street either so the house isn't gonna blow. Guest room, couch or camp in the yard.

Thanks but I should be good. Plenty of camping lights etc...its not cold and I imagine I'll be up and running tomorrow anyway.

Maybe someone who suffered damage in their neighborhood could put it to better use.

I just spent twenty minutes trying to reach the Red Cross to try to help out directly - they referred me to the United Way, who referred me to Mass211, who declined the offer.

    Jeez....

All my relatives live in Andover and North Andover. They told me customers of Columbia Gas were told to evacuate. Merrimack College also evacuated. Not sure what else.

One of them has gas heat, they shut off the feed just in case before they left.

All the businesses at the strip malls on Rt 114 and the businesses in downtown/surrounding Andover were evacuated earlier.

Lawrence fire is staged at the Showcase cinemas.

Andover was reporting 18 simultaneous fires at one point and I believe its the town least affected.

Reports of looting in downtown Lawrence already.

Re: Who's in Lawrence? Anybody need help?

Anyone else see the Mayor of Lawrence about get into it with the reporters until Baker kind of pulled him back?

I have three friends in the Andover area, I texted them all this morning,

Response 1: We're fine, our house doesn't have gas, neighbors do and had to leave.
Response 2: Everything is good, no big deal.
    Response 3: What's going on??

I have deep concerns for #3.

Re: Who's in Lawrence? Anybody need help?

Found this on a thread in r/boston, figured some might find it interesting:

Hopping on this top comment. I work for a gas utility company (not Columbia Gas thankfully). If you're in the effected area PLEASE heed all emergency warnings and instructions. Shut off your gas if you know how, otherwise evacuate immediately. And don't think that just because you can't smell gas it isn't there. The state of Massachusetts has strict requirements for the level of odorant required in natural gas, but seeing as this is the result of a huge fuck-up on the gas company's behalf I wouldn't assume anything is as it should be. Passing through miles of pipe, through soil, or through walls of your home can strip some or all of the odorant from the gas leaving it completely odorless. This event is going to be due to very high pressure gas mistakenly being introduced into a distribution system that is supposed to operate at low pressure. The high pressure overloads the pressure regulators going into your home (if you have one) and/or the regulators on your appliances (if they have them) and starts filling your house with gas. Once there is a sufficient amount of gas (flammable range is 5 to 15 percent in air) any single spark can act as an ignition source. Even the internal electronics of a cellphone can set it off. I can't speak for what went on at Columbia Gas or how it got to the point of 3 towns being over-pressurized with 50+ explosions. There's supposed to be layers of protocol/protection in place to prevent exactly this. But that will be addressed in the days and weeks to come. For now GET OUT if you are in the effected area. System wide over-pressurization takes time to be reduced which means there is still a chance that buildings fed off of this system could fill with gas and explode.

EDIT: One point of confusion I've seen on the news is people wondering why some buildings are on fire and some are just a pile of rubble but no fire. When the fire is ongoing it means gas got into the house and was ignited and continued to burn from the stream of gas, not unlike turning on your stove. When you see the house that is completely pancaked into a pile of rubble this means the building filled with so much gas that when it finally did ignite the resulting explosion was so violent that it basically blew itself out like a candle. In these scenarios the explosion usually blows the house completely apart or off its foundation, and it can be very dangerous as the gas can still be actively blowing out of the severed line, albeit with no active flame."

Glad to hear that wasn't the case.

Re: Who's in Lawrence? Anybody need help?

Technically the NG employees are locked out, net result is the same. The fact they were named to coordinate the recovery effort says a lot about Columbia. Columbia did not send out any notice to customers for more than five hours after the first fire.

The NTSB is responsible for pipeline administration and safety, so they are on site and calling the shots. WBUR interviewed an official who said the distribution lines the feed to a house is on the order of 1psi. Pipelines can be 200-1,000 psi. Somebody flubbed the Gozinta.

Radio Boston spoke with Senator Warren and US Rep Seth Moulton, both of whom said Columbia will be held accountable for all action and inaction once the recovery is complete and they hold hearings. Then Senator Ed Markey was interviewed, and blamed the Republicans. Not kidding.

Re: Who's in Lawrence? Anybody need help?

I'm in North Andover , within a five minute walk in any direction out the front door of my house there were five house fires, FIVE. All due to excessive pressure on a residential gas line. There were at least three more fires just in my town but I don't know where they were. Four of the fires were bad. One fire was about 1/16 mile from me. I spoke with the owner yesterday. He was home when it happened. It was 4:15 PM. Lucky he had a fire extinguisher next to his furnace and was able to put the fire out. The other homes that I have been to weren't so lucky. They are pretty bad.

This has been a terrifying experience for my family and neighbors. It has been as good as if we were in a war zone. There has been a constant fleet of helicopters overhead. State police Boston police, local police FBI you name it the authorities are everywhere. We have had almost no information given to us. I was told yesterday that I was not supposed to be in my home and could be taken into custody due to the area not being safe to habit. This was my Fire Chief telling me this. I did laugh at him and said OK. Apparently there was a list somewhere online that showed streets that have been cleared to occupy. About an Hr later some Gas company guys from Maine came by and told me I was safe . I believe they were working for Eversource. My street had new lines and meters so I wasn't going to have a high pressure problem. This is what they told me.
Today Sunday was the first day that seemed to be getting back to normal FINALLY. I will say this everybody around me is suffering from PTSD it was a crazy few days. Very often a fire truck or a police car stop and everyone comes out to make sure that we are safe.

I will say this. The community has come together as a group to help anyone in need. That's a great feeling seeing how divided it feels watching the news.
It's been a wild few days.
