Best wine to go with sushi?

I'm probably planning on having saki too, but wanted to hear your wine recommendations. I imagine it'd probably be a white wine, but that's really about as far as my knowledge goes. Also, it'd need to be something obtainable in most liqour stores since I'll need it for tonight's V-Day dinner.

Seafood/fish should be served with white wine. I would suggest a Pino Grigio (also known as Pino Gris), "Turning Leaf" is a good and very popular wine.

My favorite wine is "Martini & Rossi" Asti wine. It is a sparkling wine, fruity and absolutly delectable.

Also, if you would like to have a different wine for dessert, try to ask for a "Mead" wine, it's made with honey, has a sweet flavor and goes very well with dessert.

    Enjoy your Valentines day!

Thanks V. I'll have to check those out. Only issue I have is some acid reflux when drinking some wine that has a "bite" to it. There's something about red wine and some white that does that to me.

Cakebread and Sineann make great Chardonneys and Cabernet Sauvignons - depending on the meats or vegetables in the Sushi. Go with the cab with lighter meats and vegetables, and the Chard for redder meats. If they have one on the menu - Ice wines make a nice addition to fruit desserts.

To be honest, I really don't like wine, for that reason. Dry wine is a big no-no for me (most red wines are dry), I hate the after-taste it leaves. I will enjoy a fruity, mild white wine tho...Martini & Rossi is mild, bubbly and fruity/sweet. I could drink a few glasses during the course of one meal...and finish the bottle.

Mead wine is much sweeter tho, that is why it is recommend to accompany desserts (it's called a "dessert wine" for a reason)

    Give us some feedback!

+1 on the pinot grigio, it's one of my favorites because it isn't bitter at all. this is my favorite for the price range (about $15-20) and here's a review done by the baltimore sun...

    Ca'Montini

course thats on the cheaper end because you said you weren't sure if it would give you heartburn... No use spending $100 on wine you may or may not like....

My first thought was pinot grigio. But I can't really think of many wines to go with sushi. This article on slashfood kinda sums it up, and now I want to try the wine it talks about. Wine designed to match sushi - Slashfood Or Dallas Morning News | News for Dallas, Texas | Cooking tips | Food | Dallas Morning News

oh and now I'm craving sushi. Thanks a lot!

Boyden Valley makes a decent one - tough to find in the store, but available thru their site. Boyden Valley Dessert Wines

Decent whites at a lower price - Kenadall Jackson is always a safe bet, and Monkey Bay (bought it for the name and label and was impressed).

ice wine is a dessert wine, inniskillin is my choice, I guess you can just take sips in between each bite.

but for me, sushi only work with a lite beer (sapporo or asahi) or saki.

Can't say I've ever had it with sushi, but if you wish to impress someone with a fantastic white wine, you cannot do better than Corton Charlemagne. Finest brand of it's kind is probably Louis Latour. Get something at least 5 years old. It's pretty special stuff and kinda spendy.

Staring at you while you work out does not classify as him working out.

    Twin...yeah....

Start with a Pinot, go from there!

What type of Sushi? Tuna? Many different ones?

We had a bottle of Valley of the Moon Pinot with sushi last time, it was decent and reasonably priced.

isnt mead the crap you get when you go to places like medevil mannor(SP?)?

i'd stay away from teh brands V recommends...no offense V...

i would go into a nice wine and liquor store and talk to someone in there...i would focus more on what you and you girl would want rather then trying to match the perfect wine to your dinner.....those "rules" are guidelines that shouldn't be trumped by your tastes...

personally i dont really like any white wines...except some of the pinot's...they are usually way to sweet for me(v's choices) i like Yellowtail shiraz as a goto "table"...if i want to get fancy i ask.....

another reason to ask is that the price tag doesnt always reflect the quality...if you ask for a nice bottle for X occasion someone will usually fine something middle of the road that you will be happy with...

edit - also, i'd skip the desert wines and go to a nice cordial

Try beer with Sushi, (Seriously!) Sapporo works well.

As for wine White is the way to go. I would think a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or even a Pinot Noir would be good depending on the Sushi.

    Champagne is also intresting.

Stick with a sake or beer, The stony, yeasty, mildly sweet, but full-bodied taste of sakes is a natural with raw fish sitting on mildly vinegary sushi rice. and the combination of effervescent, malty beer with those wasabi-tinged treats goes well too.

As you stated in the beginning, Saki is the way to go. Sapporo too. Forget the wine.
