    Best / Worse Supermarkets?

My first choice is Market Basket. A lot of selections. Very decent meats. Cheap prices. Employees seem very nice. The worse is Whole Foods. For their prices I could spend a weekend at Loudon. What is your market?

    Interesting topic but I’ll play.
I was a huge fan of Price Chopper. Since they became Marker 32 I have noticed a significant dropped in quality of fresh products.
I try to get meat from a local butcher but as you can imagine a small business is limited to hours. Shaw’s is my next go to.
I have heard great things about Market Basket but don’t have one close by.
I’m not a fan of Whole Foods either. Way overpriced.
Price Rite has had some good quality vegetables lately too

I can’t stand Whole Foods, same product as other chain markets, but double the cost.

I like Aldi for most everything, same quality meats and veggies as the chain markets, at 1/2 the cost.

Not a fan of Market Basket, selection sucks. An entire isle side dedicated to hot dogs, and you get two choices, Oscar Myer regular or bun length, that's it. Same thing everywhere in that store. Good prices on what they have, but half of what I want they don't have.

I shop at stop and shop because I'd rather support other union workers in my area.

Wegman's, hands down. I will drive the extra distance to go past everything else to shop there.
I am also a fan of Stew Leonards when i am in the area. I just wander around in there mostly though. I am a big fan on there prepared foods. They also have some of the best steaks from a market chain.

Why? A Wegman's opened up "near" me last year, but I haven't done the research to determine if their non-sale prices are actually similar to sale prices...to warrant the extra commute time.

Hannaford. I guess it's a Southern Maine thing but they're excellent. Tons of local fresh veggies/baked goods, reasonable prices, great meats, and great beer selection.

My brother in law and his lady converted to Market Basket recently, but they're in NH.

We occasionally go to Whole Foods but I hate it. Battling through a sea of faux hippies to spend $12 on a loaf of bread, no thanks. Only reason I go is because my daughter loves their prepared mac & cheese so we go a few times in the summer and have a picnic by the bay in Portland.

    Trader Joes is the worst

Fun fact EVERYTHING in that store is just rebranded and marked up from a generically product. Even if you think its exclusive there the manufacture produces it elsewhere for others

Oh and they have a ton of legal and financial issues

I choose Hannafords anywhere in northern New England, to me, going to Market Basket is like going to Walmart

There prices are actually pretty good most of the time. They certainly have the best meats selection ive seen in a long time. They have a massive precooked and prepped section that is an easy grab for dinner when im running late but they also have a fairly extensive buffet as well. The alcohol selection is epic.
Its one of those places where i can go to, grab a lunch inside then go about shopping and im not really paying extra for it like whole foods.

I also like trader joes but i cant do full shopping there. I just grabs bags of orange chicken and those christmas oreos and hope they last until im near a joes again.

    Re: Best / Worse Supermarkets?

For the bulk of our shopping, the wife and I use Hannafords. Their prices are reasonable and produce on the whole is pretty good.

While I don't do all my grocery shopping there, I really like Whole Foods for certain items. Specifically, I like that I can get dry aged steaks from them for reasonable prices and their cheese monger has a better selection than most other stores in my area. Their prepared food section is quite nice too and they also have a bar with a good selection of draft beer and a pretty good food menu.

The closest store to me is a Shaws but they are exceedingly expensive for most items. We shop there out of convenience if only getting a few items.

Best looking soccer moms at Wegmans. Hands down.

I loathe market basket, cheap quality food (example their scallops are not "fresh" they shrivel up to a 1/4 thier size becuase they're prefrozen with that preservative I cant remember. The short ribs I bought once from there was all fat That and the women in there are just scary looking in general.

Wegmans has a much better selection of food , more quality meats and seafood and larger selection for a small increase in cost. The milfs in there look pretty good.
In addition the one by me has great wine/ liqour department where they know their stuff

    Re: Best / Worse Supermarkets?

I have two MB's I frequent. One is brand new and top of the line. Selection is huge. Even has three different types of pate`. Hitting it in the morning and grabbing a MASSIVE fresh still warm soft and chewy chocolate covered donut for $0.65 is just mint.

We have Price Chopper, Hannafords, etc nearby as well. MB all the way. Local business supporting local owners and local employees. If you want to know how to run a company that has no need for unions, give "We Are Market Basket" a read. It rewrote the book on organized labor.

I know a few employees closely. They take care of their loyal employees in a BIG way. Both retirement and straight pay.

my next door neighbor is a semi big wig at MB.. did the whole walk out 2 years ago? people stay with market basket their whole lives. they start em in high school till retirement great bonuses etc...... its like the coal/ steel plants in PA lol .

In a way I think its creepy staying with 1 company / 1 area your whole life. but thats a totally different tangent discussion

We have a Hannafords a mile from the house so we shop there. Not the cheapest place, but good quality. They have an in house butcher that will do specialty cuts, their seafood area is pretty decent, produce typically good, etc.

I'm a big bucket shopper myself but the closest 5 super markets are MBs so it's default but I do like the company itself a lot. I do a lot of good meat shopping at a local butcher so I can't speak to that but their produce does go bad a bit quick. I tend to shop when I cook due to my schedule so it's not terrible for me.

I need to read that book. I read a lot about the walk out, supported it and find it amazing. It's almost as if you treat your employees really well they won't feel the need to protect themselves from you.

    Re: Best / Worse Supermarkets?

Hannaford and Stop & Shop merged a couple years back. They have the same pricing structure, except S&S has weekly specials and “real deals” that last a month. Hannaford has “everyday low prices “ but they actually do change just like Real Deals, but people get fooled into thinking Hannaford has better prices.

I will go anywhere that isn’t busy.
