Back in 2003 S&S had plans to open 50 stores in NH, Maine and Vermont. They got up to eight in NH and one in Maine, with land owned in all three states. The recession happened, and the Basket went from having grungy stores to gorgeous ones while still undercutting S&S on price, and they sold off the land and pulled out of NH.

They laid off 700 people in NH who couldn’t be absorbed by the mass stores because they were separate union contracts.

Only for parent company Ahold to merge with Delhaise’s Hannaford.... I guess that’s one way to get profits from groceries sold in the states you failed in.

Market Basket for 3 reasons. They have good quality at great prices. The Arty S Vs. Arty T saga was the best business story of the decade. My son has worked there a few years and can always pick up a few shifts when he's home from school. They treat their workers well in a tough industry.

    OK, maybe 4 reasons.

UFCW. Most of the civilian contractors working at Westover are part of UFCW 1459. It's almost like we work for the union because our employers come and go, but the union is always the same. Every few years the current contract holder is out and a new one comes in and rehires just about everyone.

Wholefoods isn't for general shopping in my opinion. I like it for certain things like their bulk bin prices are actually good and they carry a few "hippy" items you can't get elsewhere.

I like Wegmen's for most everything, MB for certain box items and Wholefoods for produce and tofu (they carry the only decent brand you can get in non-asian stores).

WTF else do you expect people to talk about in the middle of winter?

Either get someone to shit in an office building lobby and tell us about it, or come up with something better.

Mostly everything at Stop & Shop, they're by far most conveniently located. I'd rate pretty much every department there and being "fine" in quality. I have a local butcher I go to if there's something special I need like a whole packer brisket, full racks of ribs unbutchered, pork shoulders. We also have a great farm stand nearby that is open from late spring to early fall that does well with veggies. I do MB sometimes, but they seem to be fairly spread out in SE Mass thus attracting a very high concentration of human trash. I really don't have the patience to go there more than a few times a year.

The build/repair threads are pretty neat. I recently finished changing my oil, changing fork oil/seals/bushings and completely disassembling/reassembling my front brake /changing the brake fluid. Next up is cleaning the carbs and inspecting the intake boots.

    Re: Best / Worse Supermarkets?

A factor that seems to be a per-location rather than the sign on the front is the condition of the carriages.

I get really annoyed when it needs a 4 wheel alignment, the wheel bearings are shot, or whatever could be wrong that causes the carriage to make a ton of racket, resist motion, and sometimes pull to one side. In some stores, there's the occasional shitheap so you just grab another. But some places, you can get one after another from the pile and they all suck.

Of the major chains, I don't think I have a strong preference. They all seem pretty close to each other, each with their plus/minus. I prefer stores that are open late, because I like to shop like 1-2hr before they close when it's empty. I grew up near a really nice Market Basket, and have always been kinda partial to them because of it. I'm now near one of their newer locations and it's nice to have another option. But I don't know that I'd go out of my way to choose it over a Stop and Shop or Shaws. I kinda rotate between them all I guess. I don't care for Whole Foods. It's all natural, certified organic, GMO-free snake oil. To be fair, I haven't been in one in a while. But I was in a Trader Joes in Boston recently and saw a handful of neat looking items that were just 'different' and I wanted to buy everything. Most of the usual items just seemed like different logos on the same stuff I could get elsewhere.
