    Is the Wrangler a convertible?

Figured I'd start a new thread to keep the Jeep discussions separate from the very important Ridgeline information gathering.

Small update on the Rubicon, seems to tow well. Pulls my 6x10 enclosed pretty easily, 68mph cruise control on the interstate has it shuffling between 6th and 8th gear depending on grade. At no time does it seem to 'work' at it, although milage tanks into the 15 to 18mpg range. Oddly, having the drag of the trailer seems to improve the handling, less wander in particular?

I think it's a convertible. My wife's is anyway. Oddly, I tried towing a 6x10 with hers when my truck was getting repaired form the bear incident. It didn't seem like it loved the trailer. Hers is a 2 door with a 6mt and i had to leave it in 4th or 5th on the highway.

Re: Is the Wrangler a convertible?

Of course it is. For a while it was the cheapest convertible you could buy, new.

Last towing experience I had with a Wrangler was a TJ with a 2" lift on 32" MT's. It scared the shit out of me. Too much body sway, too little wheelbase. Always felt like the cart was leading the oxx. I imagine the newer models are worlds better. Hell, I imagine the TJ would have been okay if my father hadn't put those stupid tires on.

That wheelbase was a dream handling the boat at the ramp though.

Mine is also an Unlimited, so 4dr with a longer wheelbase so that helps a ton.

I still have it. I never sold the 6x10 after getting the fun mover, and my Highlander just got replaced by the Rubicon. I should sell the 6x10... but I don't wanna!

I'd say it's more of a transformer. It starts out as a Wrangler but transforms into a steaming pile o shit.

I was dead set on a SxS once we got out here to AZ. Now I’m leaning Jeep. The SxS’s are cool (we’ve rented here), and street legal with a minimal effort and $300ish. They rip on trails, and infinitely less work than a bike or wheeler.

But, you can be in for $30k without much trouble if you’re checking the ‘want’ boxes on a SxS machine. Way too much $. I could actually drive the Jeep to Sedona/Flagstaff, etc and then explore, and drive home comfortably. And have AC. And take the dog. And have some resale value. Pretty much sold. It won’t ever provide the rush of the SxS, but I’m old anyway.

I was looking at SxS for a bit, and of course eyeballing the turbos...

A good friend said this too!

I’ve submitted a Poll to that final arbiter of Automotive Taste: NASIOC Off Topic.

They are cool, but definitely not as capable as a Jeep and once you lift them enough for proper rock crawling they're pretty fucking tippy. I imagine that if you can register a SxS, you can probably register a buggy. I'm talking tube chasis, 44" tires, 20" of suspension travel, 500+ horsepower rock bouncer. It will satisfy any adrenaline rush you crave.

Also, Jeeps are cool too. I've built a few from a mild leaf sprung YJ on 33's to a wild JK on 40's with double triangulated 4-links and 16" of travel. For wheeling out west, I'd highly recommend a JKU. The longer wheelbase of the 4 door, provided you have enough lift and large enough tires to mitigate breakover (3" on 37's is great) is a huge asset. Extremely stable platform. '07 and newer will get you in the door. Feel free to drop me a line at any point if you get serious about buying one, this is one deep fucking rabbit hole.

Re: Is the Wrangler a convertible?

When I was out in Moab last year there were SxS's everywhere. Many looked to my untrained eye as more buggy than SxS. Somewhat bizarre to pull up to a light next to a pair of retirees in a SxS on their weekly grocery run.

That said, I still dug the jeeps more. When we were at the north rim of the grand canyon a cat pulled in driving a very nicely turned out 2-door JK with a neat aftermarket soft-top, massive winch bumper, mild lift and just-right sized tires. IMO this is how I'd do it.

One night at dinner there was a newer, very well abused JK with the doors and roof off and a rear-facing kid seat installed. Lots of less than tasteful gunz stickers and the related pseudo machoism on display. Wife was appalled. I was somewhat torn. On one hand I kind of dug the jeep and was reminded how cool a doors off jeep is. On the other I was certain the owner was a d-bag.

    Agreed^^

I look at the SxS vs Jeep like an MX bike made street legal vs. a KLR650. One of them is super high performance off road, more maintenance. sucks on the road, and is better trucked. The other, heavier, reliable, can off road and street slab but not super fast. I guess it just depends on what ya wanna do more of. I noticed the older SxS guys still want the thrill of performance but donít have the body for an MX bike anymore

Also, the Wrangler isn't a convertible, it just has a removable top.

Do you have any links to some basic Jeep info so I can educate myself a bit? We've owned a bunch of GC's, but the real Jeeps are not something I am familiar with.

It is different to see the SxS's at the grocery store, gas stations, etc (golf carts too, crazy old people rip them down the roads (legally) and on sidewalks (not so legally)). It's pretty cool on one hand but I'd get tired of the ride on pavement really quick, especially without AC. I'm not interested in any type of extreme build - this Jeep will replace my wife's SUV so it needs to be a functional daily, but still haul us through the desert on the weekend. Appreciate the info, thank you.

That is the only one that I have even mild interest in. I use the more work related models often at work, and some of the more sporty ones occasionally. The belt drive automatic is just so unfulfilling. I can't understand why someone would own one for fun.

I got paid to drive around off road, even on the Autobahn flaht out in a convertible - and didn’t even know it! Here with those notorious party animals, the German Federal Border Police (Bundesgrenzschutz).
