    FEELER: Nikon camera gear

EDIT: NO LONGER A FEELER! SEE LATEST POSTS FOR UPDATES.

So I'm making some changes, upgrading my last DX body to FX, and am going to need to unload some extra Nikon equipment. There are a lot of photography forums, etc, where I can sell this stuff, but I thought I would check here first to see if there are any interested Nikon shooters. So far, I'm thinking about selling:

    - Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX
    - Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX
    - Tokina 12-24mm f/4 AT-X AF Pro DX

I might also unload the Nikon D300 and the accompanying vertical grip.

I have all the front caps, hoods, covers, cases, and original packaging. I am not in any rush to get rid of this stuff. I probably won't have my new camera before April, so this really is just a preliminary feeler. I would also consider trades for Nikon/Nikon-caompatable camera equipment.

Price? Haven't really gotten that far yet... $1,100, $175, $380... something like that for the lenses, but again, I mean for this to be a feeler. I won't sell the camera body until the replacement arrives. Let me know if you're interested, or have any questions.

Would the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX be overkill on my D3100?

I don't think so. The lens is meant for DX cameras... and it is the best DX-specific lens I have ever used. It's pretty big, and not very light, so balance could be an issue, depending on what you're used to. Since the day I got it, the 17-55 been by far my most used DX lens.

Once you shoot a bright lens like that, you'll never consider it 'overkill' again.
I often wish to hell my buddy had never loaned me his f/4 glass.

Bump and update... I think I'm going to keep the 17-55 for a little while longer. The 35 and the 12-24 are still for sale. If you shoot Nikon DX, you probably already know how great these lenses are. For me, they are two out of the three greatest bang-for-your-buck lenses I have ever used. Please let me know if you have any questions about either lens. There are some great reviews floating around out there as well.

I'm willing to relinquish the 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX as well. I also have a D300, MB-10 grip and extra batteries. I have all the original boxes, caps, manuals, etc. I'll also consider trades for other camera/lighting equipment.

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

Okay, the D300 is retired from my system. Shoots like new. See my website if you doubt what it can achieve. Comes in original box with manuals, charger and body cap. I don't think I have the original strap, which is ostentatious and uncomfortable anyway. Also have an extra battery that I'll throw in. Asking $800.

Make the camera a sports-shooter dream, and add the Nikon MB-D10 grip. This does have a some scratches on the battery door, where I dragged it across some rocks, but it works absolutely flawlessly. The vertical shutter release is a portrait shooter's dream. Again, it comes in the original box with manuals, and includes an extra battery and the AA battery holder. Asking $120. This also works on the D700.

Still for sale, best bang-for-your-buck ultra-wide DX lens, the Tokina 12-24. Boxes, manual, blah, blah, blah... I have examples of how great this lens is. Asking $380.

And, the cream of the crop, the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX. An amazing tool. Boxes, manuals, caps, hood, etc. $1,100

Weekend bump. I also have a Manfrotto aluminum tripod with a Manfrotto ball head that I'm looking to sell. Very sturdy support for big DSLRs!

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

Ballhead is the 488RC4. The legs are the 3401. They both have scratches and scrapes from regular outdoor use, but they do the job better than most. I still grab this setup when I'm doing macro work because it's more rock solid than my Gitzo/Acratech combo.

I have that 488 ball head on what I think is a slightly heavier set of legs (3021). Solid, solid stuff.

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

Because of how much wear it shows, I would let the combo go for $95. I meant to post that originally. Sorry.

Too bad the Nikkor zoom wasn't the 28-70 or the 24-70. I've had my eye on either of these for a while, but they're both still a little out of my price range.

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

I have shot both of those lenses, and they are both great, but they're too long if you're a DX shooter. Now that I'm firmly invested in FX, I'm considering a 24-70 myself, although I think my style lends itself more to the 14-24.

Really? Arcy shoots an 85mm as. Portrait lens in DX. I figured the 70mm would be perfect for close stuff.

The only short lens I have now it the 18-105 kit lens hat came with our D90.

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

I meant that as a do-it-all, walk-around DX lens, I want to be able to go wider than 24mm (which is a 36mm equivalent). But that's just the way I like to shoot. The 17-55 is essentially the DX version of the 24-70. I shot a couple of weddings, and this lens almost never came off the D300. Shooting portraits is totally different for me. The sharpness and the way a lens renders bokeh is really important when you're shooting a person, especially in a controlled environment. The 85mm f/1.4 is unbeatable in both areas, whether it's on a DX or FX body. The 85 1.8 is no slouch, either.

I just found some damage to the ball on the ballhead. I'm waiting to hear back from Manfrotto about warrantee. Still willing to sell the legs, if anyone is interested.

    Re: FEELER: Nikon camera gear

The lenses are sold, but the D300 and the MB-10 grip are still for sale.

Shoots as perfectly as the day I got it. I have the original box, manuals, body cap, screen protector, neck strap, battery and charger. I’ll also throw in an extra battery. Great info on the camera at: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond300/

I believe the body has less than 36,000 shutter actuations.

Asking $800 for the camera and $100 for the grip (also works on D700), or $850 for both.
