    19" rear ice tire

I have in my garage a 19" rear ice tire. It's homemade with gold screws (kold Kutters?) and no liner. I have ridden it twice. It hooks up really well. But like all linerless tires, a few screws will back out over time.

This is a perfect tire for a newb or recreational guy not needing to set the ice on fire. I'm offering it cheap. 50 bucks. Get out there this season without breaking the bank! Comes with a bag of spare screws.

    Tire is essentially brand new.

Can you put it through the washer/dryer & shrink it down a little?

In the mountains people use friction spikes (studs) not screws.

Agreed. Touch anything other than ice or snow with ice screws and you will wreck them quickly. Carbide studs can tolerate dirt, mud, roots, and some rocks without getting damaged instantly.

    Re: 19" rear ice tire

I've ridden on friction spikes quite a bit, including having fun on ponds with them (and I own a set already, have only one set of rims, and the spiked tires are a PIA to swap).

How much better are these screwed tires than my friction spikes for strictly ice use?

Are we talking half a second on a twenty second oval lap, or multipe seconds? They'd be on a rmz450

I do wanna ride some ice with y'all this winter...

    Re: 19" rear ice tire

A lot of it has to do with the size of the knobs on the tire, how far the studs protrude from each knob, and the density of studs/screws on the tire. Studs are intended to be run in soft terrain where they help dig in so when you run them on a hard surface like ice, they can dance around and be squirrelly. There is usually only 1 stud per knob so when you are on ice, there are only a few contact points keeping you upright. Ice screws are installed much more densely and are purpose designed to bite into ice. The higher density installation gives you a lot more surfaces touching the ice resulting in more traction.

In terms of speed, I'd say for the average rider that improvements in the range of seconds is realistic if you are committed to taking advantage of their grip.

coo thx, I've got a spare rim...just gotta pick a hard/tall knobby and run some grip studs instead!

price is very good @ $50 for a pre-studded ice tire tho

On a 20 second lap. Oh I'd say about 20 seconds faster. Seriously.

The difference is night and day. studs are just good enough to get out and play around. Screws are a must for going fast on ice.
