If he has any spare Sportster accessories he is looking to sell, I am looking for a sissy bar, double touring seat, and saddle bags for my 2001 Sportster 1200. I don't mean to hijack your thread, but just figured I'd ask.
BUMP
This is still for sale.
Any hints for me on what it is worth?
See this is what happens when you have for sale threads without pictures

eat me
Its my father in laws, he paid quite a bit for it 10 years ago and never rode it, it has sat the last 9 years :/
It really is in nice shape! barely ridden, but I get the pricing, thanks for the insight.
he has it up on craigslist
Harley Sportster 883 - motorcycles/scooters - by owner - vehicle automotive bike sale
The biggest issue with selling sportsters is you basically need to undercut whatever else is out there to create interest. The market is flooded with them. So yeah the bike is probably worth 3500 all day but there's probably 40 for sale at or around 3k that are effectively the same bike. I had the same issue selling my mils sportster a few years ago. She could not understand why 6500$ wasn't a good place to start.

Yup. Harley owners are in for a ride awakening on resale.

I had to put my Roadster on eBay. The other problem with selling a Harley is that the intersection of the two sets of people who want a Harley - or a Sportstèr, at least - and can afford a Harley seems small. I heard some amazingly creative financing proposals.
One good thing - no one asks for a test ride! Sold it to a school teacher in Maine. The fact it was a Roadster (dual disks, tach, full length shocks) was completely lost on him.
I imagine selling an 883 is an uphill battle as well.

He now has it on craigslist for $4500
It's been this way for years. Its not HD owners but owners of any motorcycle that 'customizes' it and expects to get return on their flashing LED's, leopard fur seats, custom paint, or are total newbies.
The motorcycle industry on a whole has been on a decline. The days of HD's bringing full retail was the 1980's just after the employees bought the company back from AMF.
No different than ADV'ers loaded with touratech bling.
Or racers loaded with Ohlins, exhaust systems and power-commanders.
Or hipsters that take a grinder to a perfectly good 80's UJM.
Or...
I kind of hope some Harleys have held their values. Maybe just a little.
I’d probably take one off someone’s hands for a few grand. I’d accept only cash though.

This may be like some boat ads.
“Husband, sell that boat, you never use it.”
“Yes, dear.”
Lists it for sale for at least 50% more than its worth.
In this case more like 100%.
