That's the most adulting answer. Selling off some motorbikes may actually open up some time to go ride something like that. Which is a goal for me for 2017.

FWIW: I did a halfass version of the R7 paintbrush & simple-green treatment to this thing on Monday. It was clean! (ish)

Well, it's better than I expected. Wanted? Uhhh...the lack of top speed/impossibility of gearing for both woods and street is probably gonna cost me ten grand in orange bike at some point, assuming the orange bikes are significantly better in that regard (are they?). But I'm very, very happy with the bang for my buck with this one. My expectations were low and I currently own bikes that are better in the woods and on the street...but not both in the same bike. My son wants to start riding some street so this bike may serve that purpose too, and lack of top speed might actually be a plus for that duty.

My two biggest pleasant sunrises with this bike:

    1) it's not tooth rattling on the street...it's smooth enough where you think about things other than the bike you are on...lose yourself in the ride, so to speak. That could be a problem if I default to sport bike turn entry speeds by mistake but it's not like I'm coming into the corners at ninety, because the bike starts to complain at about 60.

    2) Wow there is a lot of perfect terrain...and views and opportunities for further exploration for this bike...very close to where I live. Roads that I never pay much attentin to, because I avoid them in cars or on other bikes. They are seemingly everywhere. That cool pond view is less than 10 miles from my house and I've never seen it before, because it's on a dirt road that isnt the short route to anywhere.

So, the allure in this bike isn't that I will be wowed every time I ride it, because of the bike...it's because it's a low cost way to access tons and tons of cool stuff FROM the bike

    Re: 2003 Kawasaki KLX400SR / Suzuki DR-Z400S / Supermoto/dual-sport

The front sprocket I have on there is more woods friendly than street for both wheel sets. Swap the larger sprocket (its in the box of crap) back on and you might find it more streetable. I went to the smaller sprocket for boxshop. I also had a massive, woods sized sprocket on the SM wheel for that. With street gearing I was getting positively crushed on that short course. Dirt gearing is required there.

Yes, that is the appeal of the DRZ. It's not a dirt bike motor! It takes 2 qt of oil that doesn't need to be changed after every ride. The valves seem to never move. And the motor is smooth and has an enormous flywheel.
The downside is it weighs a ton and just isn't that responsive compared to a real dirt bike.

I think the new CRF250L and such appeal for the same reasons.

    You're doing it right.

Regarding the orange competition. Yes, they are that much better. The 450 EXCs I've ridden are a smashup of the WR450F I have now, my 200 XC-W and that DRZ. Power like the WR. Quality suspension and brakes like the 200. And approachable, tractor like livability like the DRZ.

The 500 EXC is just ridiculous. Way more power. Wheelies everywhere while on woods gearing yet legs to do 60+ in comfort. No compromises when gearing that thing.

The EFI 350 EXC may be the best of both. Even lighter. Very reasonable power. Excellent components. Nice EFI.

And the kicker with all of those orange bikes comes when you go to snap your left foot up cruising in 5th and find it HAS ANOTHER GEAR!!!

When you do get orange fever, remember those SM wheels will fit with some spacer work for the front. The rear will bolt right up.

It depends a lot on the model you look at. The EXC models have taller gearing because they are intended for woods and street use. That said, the stock gearing on my 500 EXC was a little too tall for New England single track. The damn thing would idle in first gear around 5-6mph which is not good for crawling over obstacles if you value your clutch. It will also break 100mph with the stock gearing which isn't something I need to do with a bike like this. I went down a tooth in the front sprocket and up 3 or so in the rear (lowest ratio possible with the stock chain) and it made a big difference in its off road manners and cut the top speed to somewhere in the 80's.

Exploratory bikes are fun as hell. I hit the dirt roads last night with Motoboosie and we had a ball. She had some envy of my power whoolies. We saw some great views and topped out at 50 mph the whole trip. This is my preferred type of street riding now.

Have fun on that do eet all bike.

    PS.. The EXCs are choice...

First owner put like 3400 miles on it in 10 years.

Just felt like pointing that out.
