Can it be converted to a multi speed if I wanted?

The frame can, and it comes with the right side dropout with deraileur hanger. The stock rear wheel is single speed only, so the rear wheel would need to be replaced.

Cassette, derailleur, shifter, I think the cable is still attached. I'm pretty sure it's SRAM x9, or x0, I'll have to look.
I took it off my bike upon purchase, so it's literally brand new.

and you can check out any of the online shops for rear 29er wheels. Something like this:

And you'd have a spare wheelset, 1 for geared, 1 for singlespeed. I think i have a spare set of 29er tires i'll throw in.

How would this bike fare for someone that wants to commute to work under 10mi give or take.

Well it's a good mountainbike so it will easily take the abuse of a short commute. If it's a lot of just streets / urban riding, I would suggest a bigger ring up front (i have a spare 44t around i could throw in) and some narrower, higher pressure tires, which together would get it up to speed quicker and smoother.
