Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

My wife has become keen on getting her own steed. We're looking for a 250 cruiser style (Rebel, Virago, etc.). Age and mileage really aren't too important. This is something that we'll have for a year or until she realizes that it's not as scary as she thinks and gets a "pretty" bike. Hopefully we can find something in the $1000 to $1500 range.

I got a friend with a Buell Blast that he used to ride on last year and really liked it. He is rerady for a bigger bike and is selling his for 1500 or so.

if I can help, a Buell has got to be the easiest bike to learn to ride on. A Blast isn't a 1200 (mine) but there is so must torque out of the hole you have to try and stall it. Its well balanced so it doesn't feel heavy too.

My roommate is thinking about riding as well, so he may be interested in the bike as well. Let me know if Trouble doesn't want it.

Ya'll keep in mind that while the price might be a bit higher than you want...Vix has got that Ninja 500, AWESOME starter bike...reliable, controlable, etc. etc.

Does she know how to operate a motorcycle already?

When Renee wanted to get her street license, I steered her to dirt riding first.

When she finally hit the road, she was far ahead of most in her MSF class.

Re: Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

If she isn't 100% set on cruiser-style, Ninja 250s and 500s, and Suzuki GS500s can typically be found for relatively cheap. Good starter bikes, and not too tall (if she is on the shorter side). And when she's ready to move up, you can keep it for a twistie-monster.

Re: Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

That was kind of my first reflex. You can't really hurt a dirt bike, and I wouldn't mind the hand-me-down. Is there a way to easily lower the suspension? She's not very tall (or confident) and I didn't want anything too top heavy.

Re: Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

trouble-idk if you've found a bike yet but i bought my ninja 250 last season and rode it throughout the summer...its got about 6,000 miles on it...its a 97 purple/red (got the prettiness factor lol) and it runs well thanks to TLRman ...its got a few bumps and bruises all from the previous owner who was quite the baboon when it came to bikes...

i'm still riding it now...got a few cracks in the plastic but if thats not a big deal...i'd be willing to make you an offer in your price range

I really appreciate it, but she is dead set on a cruiser style ride. Weird huh? I tried to convince her on another ninja and she wouldn't hear of it. Thanks though!

Re: Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

Our compromise on the bike I have now is an FZ6. She'd rather ride on a chopper than a sport bike, but she was willing to split the difference after riding on the back of the FZ6. Now she is expressing an interest in getting her own bike and I'd like to start her off in the direction she is headed so that she'll let me get a sport bike.

Re: Wanted: a beginner ride for the wife

Now you are talking my language! My last ride was a M900. I don't think it would handle the inevitable drop(s) too well though. It seemed like there were a lot of them with dented tanks from the handle bars even from a driveway drop. Maybe she'll step up into something like that after the first year. We are (hopefully) going to check out a Rebel on Sunday. Nothing special but something she can learn on and then pass on to another new rider.
