Ehh I would go for a 4 stroke for his dirt bike. An XR250 like Mondo has would be perfect.

I would suggest that for someone that was newer to bikes in general. He knows how to ride and although the xr250 would be a good starting point I think it would let him down pretty soon especially if he really gets into it.

125 2 stroke would do you just fine. Cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, does fine in the woods and on the track. Simple, effective, reliable.

If I can offer some advice for you, Im in the same boat, never ridden dirt before, just bought a dirt bike. Do NOT cheap out on a project. For 2gs you can find a perfect bike. I just rode the woods for the first time on saturday, and holy shit, thats enough work and effort without having to worry about whether the bikes gonna fall apart or not.

Where we're going has 4 times the milage that clough has, and we didn't even cover all the trails at clough.

Could always get a KTM200SX, KDX200, KTM300EXC, any 4 stroke 250 mx bike, any 2 stroke mx bike 125cc or bigger. Just make sure that if you get a 2 stroke that you take the motor apart to check for wear of the crank and top end.

Ahh eff it just get a CR500.
