08 DR-Z400SM big bore, fcr, etc

    2008 DR-Z400SM Supermoto

97xx miles (ridden daily so going up)
Engine rebuilt at 8600 miles because of a broken countershaft. All work done by REP
    Rebuild consisted of:
valve job with SS one piece valves
    Cylinder Works big bore kit
    E cams installed
E-spec base gasket (single layer, 12:2 I believe - premium fuel required)
    Manual cam chain tensioner installed
    Main transmission bearing replaced

Engine was properly broken in with dino oil, oil and filters changed. Valves checked 150mi after rebuild. Now running Rotella T6, I was going to change it again soon - have a gallon jug to go with.

    Other mods:
FCR39-MX carb from JDJetting, set up by them for my bike
    Yoshimura RS-2 full exhaust
    3x3 mod
SS front brake line (have a rear line that's not installed yet)
    Manual petcock
    Lighted handguards
    Larger footpegs
New chain and sprockets at time of rebuild - DID VX2 520 and Superlite Steel 15/38
    R6 Grips/Throttle Tube
    SS oil filter
    New air filter
New front brake pads and fluid last spring (8200 miles?)
    Unknown fender kit

Sold! $4,500. Clean title in hand.

The DRZ400 has to be one of the, if not the most versatile machines out there right now. I'm guessing this one is even better as it probably isn't even slow.

I would encourage someone to buy this.

It's fun as hell. It's overweight for a dirt bike but on the street it feels like it weighs nothing. I can keep it balanced at 1-2mph in traffic no problem, scooting around cars is the easiest thing in the world, and now with the power mods it can really move even with 3 less teeth on the rear sprocket. I've taken it on the highway for 30-45m stretches which are bearable at around 70mph but on every other kind of road it's way more fun than the naked 900cc i4 that it replaced.

Price drop to $5k for NESR members. I've just put ~$2500 into the bike - this is as low as I'll go.

Also, proper FS ad now up with pics. Any omissions or questions let me know.

Am I doing something wrong here? I thought that this was a good value in general and for a sumo or DRZ specifically.

Also, no longer looking for trades. Bump.

I'd give it a few more weeks, the nice weather will motivate someone to pick it up. If I had the cash it would've been in my garage already.

Since you asked- when you originally posted this, I shared a link to your ad elsewhere. A few people replied that it was priced way high for a 9 year old DRZ. Yes, this one is a bit of a loaded unicorn, but as you know, mods rarely add value to the selling price of a motorcycle. In particular to this bike, to most people a DRZ is a great starter/beater/entry-level dualsport/sumo... for <$3g. Most people looking for something higher-spec with a budget of $5g are shopping for something orange.

Post it up in the ADVrider flea market, if you haven't already, more people there will see the value in it.

It's a rad bike. I would surely make you an offer if I didn't have way too many bikes at the moment.

My experience is colored by selling cars with issues, but selling bikes with issues -- even small ones that you openly disclose -- just makes your life harder.

There are buyers out there that will think "If it has X wrong with it, it might have Y wrong with it too". If I was you, I'd make the time/money to figure out the carb issue and sort it out. Whatever money you spend, you will get back with an easier sale.

I hear what you're saying but a $3k bike is beat to shit. Based on the market I would be looking for around $4k for this bike bone stock. From what I've seen people either ride a beater, a stock bike for around this price, or they go all in with an orange bike or a DRZ with all these mods. I'm hoping to hit the sweet middle, I guess I'm just waiting for the rare buyer.

I figure I'll be doing just that.

Which is still crazy since it was 6k new. 66% after almost a decade?
But you're right based on the market of used jap products, and I'm surprised it hasn't sold.

All good Stoneman, thanks. I think we've established that these bikes hold their value very well (I agree that it's surprising) and it's all good.
