    Horse(s) Wanted...

Yeah, Big Shirl's at it again. This time it's horses. I know there's a few on here that are into that sorta thing, so if ya know of any GOOD trail/kid/learning horses let us know...

We've already got a stable reserved for it/them. But we're also actively looking for a nice chunk of land nearby that we can build our own barn & stables on...

She's looking for something in the 10-15 year range, no more than 15 hands...

Arab horse + beginner = hospital bills. My apologies for the generalization, and I'm sure there are a few exceptions out there, I just haven't seen them in the 20 years I've been riding and training horses.

I know a couple of people you could get in touch with, all "horse traders". Some people will tell you to avoid those types, I'm not one of them. I'd rather pay a little extra and get a written guarantee than buy a horse from someone that may have worked well for them, but wont work well at all for me.

Remember, horses aren't like bikes. They don't remain static. The horse that rides great one day may be an asshole after it sits for a few days, or if it rains, or if it just doesn't like you. I've fallen off my dirt bike plenty of times, it never hurts nearly as much as being bucked off a horse.

If its for your kids, get something older (12+ yrs old) and healthy. Have it checked out by a vet. See if the seller will let you lease it for a month or two before you write the check.

    Good luck.

I agree ... my first wife was a horse trainer at an Arabian farm.

They are hot blooded horses, beautiful to look at and a handful to handle.
    (remind you of sportbikes?)

Then you get your warmbloods which typically are a cross breed between
hot and cold bloods, they have the athleticism of the hot blood and hopefully
the temperment of a cold blood. Many use them for dressage for that reason.

Finally you get the cold bloods, these are the big work horses and some of
your ponies ... has nothing really to do with size.

Jay ... my advice to you is to not go there. Once you have a barn and horses,
there is no such thing as vacations or days off anymore. You got to
be there twice a day, every day mucking shit, getting sawdust for bedding,
picking the compacted shit out of their hooves so they don't get thrush.
You got vet bills and hoof trimming and shoeing. You also should exercise
them each day if they are kept in a stall, that means another hour lunging
them. Of course you can keep them in a pasture and just look at them,
cause I am going to bet hard money that is whats going to happen.

Don't count on your kids volunteering, it is 20 times the work of a dog. You
are the one that will end up going to sawmills to pick up sawdust or going
to farms to pick up straw and hay. It is a lot of hard work and there is no
"I don't feel like it today, I am sick and want to stay in bed."

Find a stable, lease a horse and let them take care of the horse for you.

I did that crap for over 5 years and it gets real old real fast.

If you got questions, please call me.

hmmm.....my mothers owned them most of her life......never been hurt...matter of fact the only ones that have given her troubles was a stud....not to start a war....but,i believe its all on who's the owner......show fear and there is no respect.......fear is a big thing...and they can sense it,then they become afraid of what your gonna do.....have had lots more troubles with appoloosa's....there the real dinks of the horse world.....

my mother dont have a website.....

BTW.....shes got 8 arabs......2 of them are rescues from other people, that have no clue on horses........

Just to be clear here: While I'm not even remotely a horse person, it's nothing new to my wife. She quite literally grew up with horses, although she's been outta the circle for about 15 years. I shoulda said she's getting back into it...

    Horse(s) Wanted...

    hey jay,
yes, horses are a lot of work and they can be very expensive. i have 2, but i board them both. obviously it is a lot more expensive than keeping them at home but it lets me have my free time.

i agree with highsider about arabians but i've never really been a big fan of the breed anyway so ....

are you looking for something that your wife can ride as well, or is it just for tovah? do you have an instructor/trainer that can work with you if you run into trouble? feed/turn out/work schedule can really affect a horse's attitude. i've seen some very nice quiet horses turn into psychos under the wrong conditions.

there's a very sweet little mare for sale at the farm where i keep my horses. she's a lot younger (4 years old) that what you are looking for, but she is extremely quiet. she's currently being ridden by a 10 year old girl and has been to some small shows. pm me if you want more info.

    -patricia

    Horse(s) Wanted...

Hi Jay, any help you need give me a PM or call, I'd be happy to help you out. I have 3 students that I have been looking for at the moment and have looked at about 25 horses in the last month alone. It is a bit of a tough market right now, but for what you are looking for may be a bit easier. Just be sure to take someone with you both when you go to buy a horse. I have WAY to many clients that were lied to, ripped off and just screwed in general before we met. As far as breed, don't generalize. There are more calm breed than others in general, but there are always exceptions. It's all in how the horse is/was trained and handled.

I would also recommend leasing a horse for a year or so before you decide to buy one. Boarding works out much better for most people, especially for people with other jobs/hobbies/kids/etc.

Shit, 17 inch? You can spoon modern race tree on there, it'll just end up with a slightly taller profile.

    Wait, what?

    Horse(s) Wanted...

Wife and daughter each have one; they are an appendix Quarter horse and a Morgan. I like Quarter horses, I grew up around them.
It cost me a shit load of money for show team/horse shows/expenses.
I have to haul horse shit off the property once a week and fix fence a few time a year plus I built the barn, the paddock and the riding ring. BUT having them on the property vice boarding paid for itself in about 2 years.
My wife’s biggest joy is just taking care of them.
    Happy Wife equals happy life.

The place I ride and teach at buys and sells horses. If your still looking message me and I will give you her number... She sells mainly German horses but also has a ton of ponies under 15 hands that she uses for the kids camps we do but is also looking to sell some. Height really is not a huge issue, if it's for your kids I wouldn't suggest going bigger than 16, but it's really about temperment, and if you can find a quiet horse your golden.
