    An MBA Degree

I invested a lot of time, money and energy into a totally worthless piece of paper called a 'MBA Degree'.

I am selling it for cheap if anyone wants to buy it. You will not have to go through two years of classes, lectures, networking events and assignements. You will save two years of your life. Buy it from me cash down and save yourself the trouble. Maybe you will have a better use of it than I do. Or maybe completely useless as it is for me! You could roll it to smoke weed as well. I can't even afford that!
You can also buy it for your kids as well. Will make a great college graduation gift! Two degrees in one day!

Make me an offer! Bidding starts with my entire student loan! I will thrown in a Kawasaki ZX 7R with it!

From my own personal experience, you should get the MBA AFTER you're in the field you want to work in.

You're a little to late with the MBA, you really needed that in the 80's and 90's. Take your degree and get a job working in a field you love, even if it don't pay so well.

    Re: An MBA Degree

In all honesty, if you don't already have a job and are getting an MBA right out of college, you're wasting your time. You're better off getting a job and having them pay you to get your MBA, then give you a raise when you get it. If I were interviewing 2 candidates and one had an MBA, it honestly would have no impact on my hiring decision.

Every employer knows that you buy an MBA, you don't earn one. Most MBA programs won't fail you if you've paid your tuition. You have to really fuck up to fail MBA classes.

    Aww crap...

I majored in music and I work at a non-profit... and currently getting my MBA. I guess I'm all sorts of FAIL

    ==

    Edit To Add:

    I shouldn't be SOooo sarcastic.

I graduated college with a degree in music and minor in advertising/pr.

I worked various things for a while before landing an ad/pr related job at a non-profit. Certainly not ideal (since I wanted to combine music and marketing). Although I perform and also teach music, I didn't want it to be too much of "a job" -- i wanted to continue to enjoy it, not worry if I'd make enough to support myself.

Realizing that my current degree helped me in one side of things only, I looked into going to a local college and just taking some night courses to supplement the 'business side of things.' A year or two into my job and out of school for a couple years, I decided to pick up an MBA.

I'm working backwards... Most guys do the corporate thing for a while and then do non-profit for a little bit to 'put meaning into their lives.' I'm gaining some very interesting experience in my position - experience that my friends in the 'corporate' world aren't getting, as I get to touch on every facet of a business, from the Board of Directors, to financial, programmatic, Management Team and Middle management. What I don't have in salary, I make up in experience (or that's what I tell myself...).

Given my background is mostly in music; I wanted to strengthen my credentials by way of education. When all is said and done, I'll have an MBA with concentrations in Management and Marketing, and possibly HR and Non-Profit Leadership as well. It might be all moot, but I'm weird and enjoy learning...

    Re: An MBA Degree

That's a bit of a different story and you have a strategy. Most people get an MBA because they don't want to go out into the real world and get a job. That and they think they'll be more likely to get a job with one (not usually the case). You shouldn't get a degree 'just because' unless someone else is paying for it.

... Like, I have a bachelor's in psych and am getting one in Eco/Finance just because I can (and its more applicable to my field). I'm also getting an MBA, but I'm only paying 10% of my tuition for both.

I had a friend who went to school in a particular field... upon graduation I learned she was going to continue on and get a Masters in the same field, at the same school.

"What do you want to do?" I asked her.

    "I don't know."

If you have to PAY for any sort of advanced degree in any of the engineering fields, you are likely not qualified to get one in the first place...

    Hmmm,

    Let's weight things out:

    DG:
6? years of college for Associates, BA, MBA degree
    $$$$ in student loans
    No job (yet)

    Me:
    Absolutely no college
    No student loans ever
    low 6 figure salary
Specialized Application Deployment (both hardware & software)

Unfortunately, today's younger generation can't get jobs based on experience, because no one will give someone wothout a degree a job to get the experience.

I worked my way up from an email admin to sysadmin to network admin to applications admin and the only training I received are 1 day to 1 week specialized training courses.

Although I'm all for getting an education, I realize that it's not "the one" path. Education doesn't equate to larger earnings or a good job, but it's the path I've chosen and I thoroughly enjoy.

I think the best thing anyone can do, is to find the path to happiness (happiness as defined by the individual) and work towards it.

For me, if you enjoy your work to the point where it's not 'work' then that's happiness. It's not what you make, it's what you save that equates to the toys you can have.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not (I thought Asians were supposed to be smart...). But if you're not being sarcastic, then thanks!

It's truly hard for a lot of people to realize that wealth is what you save, not what you earn.

A lot of people live a $30k (or more) lifestyle on a $20k salary. When they get a $30k salary, what do they do? Start living a $40k lifestyle. I'm not sayin' I'm any good at trying to save what I make, but I do realize that in order to have 'wealth' that's what I should do.
