WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

A co-worker is looking to get into MCing. He's got a good sense of proper this and that for a new rider (MSF, gear, moderate bike, ...)

$2500-3500 and either well maintained or low milage (because he's not a good wrench)

    600 - 750cc preferably f.i.

    fully faired

    no preference on brand

wants to be able to commute and play not into stunting or TD

I asked if he'd go naked and he said he don't go that way. Just looking out for ya Denno

He's all ready scouring the usual spots to find bikes CL, Bike Trader .....

The YZF would probably be a good starter. Good power, not too much. CBR F4I also could be good.

Unfortunately, I have neither to sell.

Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

Got a 2006 Ninja 500 and thinking of upgrading at some point soon (have my eyes set on FZ6)...looking in the low to mid 3k range. I still ride it to work when there is no ice/snow on the ground. It is carburated, but always starts up regardless of the temp. Some minor scuff that can be seen up close from somebody backing into the bike when it was parked on Memorial drive - nothing major or structural.
    Let me know if interested.

From the list noted, I would only recommend the YZF600 as a starter bike, and even that I would say ride very carefully.

I have already cautioned him on his intended bike. I suggested a bike like yours and he didn't really know much about it..... do you have any pictures of yours that I can forward to him?

Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

    I'm thinking about selling my '00 ZX6R

Carbureted but I don't see a single reason why you would want to stay away from that... the thing's smoother than any FI bike I've ever ridden & runs like a champ.

If he's interested I'll throw a new chain on it, get the valves adjusted & sell it for $3500.

Cool Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

I have only one cell phone picture
Picasa Web Albums - Daniel - My Ninja

The Ninja 500 and the Suzuki GS500, IMHO, are the best starter bikes. I was afraid that I would outgrow it, and I must say that I haven't yet. I just want a different toy.

I haven't decided 100% about selling it yet. I would also need to approve the upgrade with the significant other....

Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

I'm not sure why the guy wants FI vs carbs Only one of my bikes has FI the others do just fine without. I've seen your zx but are there any to show the potential buyer?

Thanks Dani, I know I started on an 85 honda ascot 500 and at retirement i was beating the bag out of it with an ear to ear grin, man what fun that bike was ..............funny I have come full circle and now I want/have a 50 hp hawk as my favorite ride

Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

For his price range, he probably won't find much that is FI without high miles and/or being dumped at some point in its past. Carbs vs FI is not a good determinant of a good starter bike, IMO. Get one that is in good shape, runs well, preferably low miles and/or one owner who hopefully didn't dump it in anything faster than a parking lot tip-over.

Hope he gets something smart and doesn't get all hung up on the shiny stuff, like chromed-out Gixxahs and whatnot. You said he is pretty smart, so try to help him stay that way. It's easy to get caught up in the newest and bestest technology, without realizing the first one will probably end up ont he ground at least once.

Re: WTB: Mild sportbike for noob rider

Totally agree with mzdagrl! It is very tempting to go for something new and shiny, but with your first bike you will make stupid mistakes. I used to ride a little about 10 years ago and then got reintroduced back in August. Since August I put on about 3k miles. I can't tell you how many stupid mistakes I did (down shifted instead of upshifted and the opposite, pressed on the brake instead of the clutch, locked my rear wheels...) I have been VERY lucky to be on a Ninja 500. It is such a forgiving bike and I have never dropped it . I am sure I would have gotten more in trouble had I gone for a more powerful bike with strong brakes, etc...The worst has got to be forgetting that the petcock was on fuel off and getting stuck. It took me 30 minutes to figure out why my almost new bike was stuck!
I can certainly understand the itchiness to get a nice new bike...I am feeling it right now (and it is not fungus!)

Still plenty of life left in that 06 500r.. Until you can beat Darryl on his "shitty mcbikefest" EX500 you don't need a new bike.

I saw your wife's bike too. It looks great. It looks like you have an after market windshield - which one is it? It fits it well. If the other guy will be interested in my bike I would consider buying your wife's bike. All around the world it is the replacement for the Ninja 500, but in the US the 500 continued to sell. In all respects I think it is a better bike than the 500 - the only two things where the 500 has an edge (these are minutia) is a slightly larger tank at 4.8 gallon vs 4.1 gallon and having a center stand. The three upgrades that I have been looking at are the FZ6, Ninja 650 and the SV650. All are a little different and have their virtues. All are better bikes than the 500.
