I don't understand the email scams where they ask you to quote on HP toner cartridges, with a spoof email and company. Actually called one once and said, "Can you explain how you make money off this?" But the guy was in Pakistan, confused and grumpy.
My cousin recently received a call station that there was an arrest warrant against her unles she paid off her "debt". Scumbag s are everywhere. Just this morning I read something about the Treasury trying to crack down on IRS scams.

    Acknowledge and agreed.

Should have thought about my good character cousin who is a trans and my other beloved cousin who just married another man. Not okay. Not affraid for saying I was in the wrong. Thanks for calling that out.

Off topic... but I once swapped two digits while trying to text a friend's new number. Ended up in a 45 minute long conversation with some random guy about home renovation before he started to catch on that I wasn't who he thought he was talking to. We both ended up with a good laugh over it.

When I get them those types of calls I pretend to be all scared like "oh no, somethings wrong with my computer?", "oh jeez, how can we fix it", blah blah blah for a few minutes sounding like a nervous nelly cutting him off every time he offers how he can help. Then I say something like its a Linux computer or a mac and call them some sort of name and hang up.

Though I have heard there is a scam where you aren't supposed to say "yes" when answering some basic question. Not sure if that is a hoax or not.

They record your answer "yes" and copy it into the fake conversation with your real yes consenting to whatever they offer.

Lol. He did say that the problem was with my windows computer. What are the odds that I would have a windows PC?

Them: Those are all the computers trying to hack you.
Me: Oh no! This looks really bad! How do I fix this!

They ultimately want you to use a remote desktop service so they can interact directly with your computer. Some of them aren't actively malicious but want to scare you into buying their useless service. Others will do bad things to your computer if you give them access and then refuse to pay for anything.
The fact you were able to run netstat without question should have tipped them off to begin with

I've done this as well, you try to waste their time and they get really mad. My problem is that I always start laughing too early and they just hang up.

Re: BEWARE - 724-789-9296 - Possible Fraud Alert

Over the years I'd get a little wave of BS calls where I figured some customer database got dumped. I would never answer, just let it ring to voicemail, and eventually it'd stop. Maybe 6-9 months ago, another wave appeared to start but never subside. Talking with a few other people, all of whom are smart about when and where they distribute their number, have had the same experience. It's just relentless. In my case, it seems to be mostly the same electricity bill relief scam, with the occasional other common types. I got curious and started picking up. Now I press 1 to agree to speak to a rep, which I leave on mute. The people who've answered appear to have no accent and good call connection which surprised me.

Pretty good odds still. And if you say 'I have a mac' I'd bet they just hang up or ask if you have another computer 'in the home'. There's a guy who trolled one with a Linux machine for a good bit.

I thought it was pretty clear the original post was just trying to document facts assumed useful as part of the warning. In the future, those who describe nationality, race, gender, and other physical traits as part of a police report will be deemed bigots. A gender fluid amorphous blob of beauty took money from a cash register without permission, an act formerly known as theft.

OK coming to think of it, I suspect the call you got from that number was actually Oreo. I think Oreo does have a foreign accent. It was either him or definitely nhbubba.

^This. I'm amazed that anyone picks up a call from an unknown number. I'm even more amazed that people call the unknown number back if, when they pick up, the line is silent/dead.
