    Guns...

I'm hoping that by starting a separate thread, we can keep this topic off the 'sympathy' thread. It's to be expected that the debate will be renewed with passions along the whole range of viewpoints.

Perhaps some things to consider as the debate begins. Gun Control is not the same as banning all guns. Pro Guns doesn't always mean complete, unrestricted access to any form of firearm.

It would be wonderful if everyone could recognize that this IS an important issue and that those who's point of view is different from yours are not Anti American or Pro Killing at random.

    Re: Guns...

I'm not debating guns again but I will say this...

Sick people do sick things. You can't write a law that will change that overnight. Banning guns is a feel good for some people. I their head, guns are the evil. If guns were wiped off the face of the planet these people would find the next best way to do the damage they want.

It seems these people are upset, blame everyone for their problems and want their name known. Why else would they kill people they don't know? They, most of the time, kill themselves so you know they don't really care about anything(life wise, never mind law wise).

The real answer is identifying these people and helping them if possible. For a lot of them there may be no help. I don't know how we would go about this but it seems a more logical direction. Shit always seems comes out about how messed up they were so there must be signs to look for.

If there was a good way to identify them, I wold not object to suspending their right own a firearm. But, if they are intend on causing harm there is no law that will stop them.

It can be a slippery slop but if someone is seeing a doc for some serious psychic issues which may include suicidal thought suspending their right until they're better may not be a bad idea. Problem lies in who get to decide and what level of issues warrants pulling their/our rights. And why stop at guns? How about driving a car through a crowd? How about locking the doors to a building a lighting it on fire? Good old fashion TNT?

I heard this somewhere once...'You can't apply rational thought or rational laws to an irrational person.'

There is no good answer but either way, its a person issue not a gun issue.

    Guns...

Let me start by saying i dont own a gun and have no license to carry. It is much easier and quicker in this country to obtain guns illegally. I think its also fair to say the majority of crimes committed in this country that involve guns, the gun is stolen. Restrictions on guns obtained legally will do nothing to prevent what is happening in this world from happening. Its better to have and never need than need and never have.

The 2nd amendment is just a law, it may be harder to change than other laws but just like any other law it can be changed.

As I said I don't think that there is anything to be done about guns and gun laws.
Weapons in our country are so plentiful and so easily made that the cost to effect any meaningful attempt to restrict them would be so expensive that it is impossible.

I do believe that better healthcare that can help the people who are driven towards such heinous acts is one of the answers.

It would be nice if the Gun Industry would admit some responsibility for keeping guns out of these sick people hands.
    Perhaps publically support better healthcare...

That will never happen since they see no profit in it.
The cold truth is that everytime something like this happens, they make money.

I don't have all the answers but nothing will improve until people work together towards a goal instead of against each other.
That might mean compromise which is something that a lot of people refuse to do these days.

Cute Colin. But we know that's not true. (Well...maybe for you!) Most gun owners have guns as a hobby. Like most motorcyclists have motorcycles as a hobby. Even if you could insure that no criminals had guns, most gun owners wouldn't want to give up their recreational use of firearms. Further more...there is a large percentage of gun owners who believe they need firearms to protect them from the Govt. They'd not give up there rights even if no criminals had guns.

BUT...I certainly support any effort to prevent criminals and the mentally unstable from getting firearms. More importantly, I'd love to see 50% of the brainpower, energy and money spent on defending firearms spent on impoving the quality and access to mental health.

Guns dont kill people. And most people don't kill people. Mentally unstable people, criminals, drug addicts, kill people. Is it unreasonble to try and keep firearms away from these folks and get treatment for those who need it...?

(Dammit Sam...you got your's in while I was typing mine.... )

Most guns, like most 'controlled substances', should be legal and highly regulated. The responsibility of their ownership should be commensurate with their lethal nature.

I don't think there's a comprehensive solution, but only a pragmatic response (which I have no idea how to start). So far, only the unrealistic, idealist solutions are being bantered about on my Facebook feed.

Clamping down on gun laws after something like this is like clamping down on speed limits to lower traffic fatalities. It's a people problem, not an equipment problem.

As others said, there are laws on the books that are supposed to help prevent things like this. They obviously are NOT being followed. What possible good would more new laws actually accomplish?

Im definitely not a gun person, but after this one, I'm planning on getting my CCL and picking up a handgun of some sort. I hope to god I never have to touch it outside of a range, but if someone threatens me or my family, I will not hesitate.
That said, I STILL dont understand why anyone has a valid reason why they need assault rifles or machine guns of any sort. Handguns for personal protection? Sure, rifles for hunting? Not for me, but I understand. But assault rifles and machine guns? Just to make themselves feel badass. Thats all. I wouldnt care if they were outlawed.

Rationalize it anyway you want. No one realistically needs assault rifles nor do they really need liter bikes. Some people WANT them even if you don't; and that's ok.

Some people hate motorcycles, think they are dangerous and shouldn't be allowed. Should we ban them based on that? Same thing with the assault rifles etc....

I'd bet people buying a liter bike (before they're ready for one) causes more death, destruction and heartache for families than some lunatic shooting people like it's a video game (maybe we should ban those too!).

Mark also said it in the other thread. No one gets bent out of shape regarding the HUGE death toll drunk driving, texting while driving etc... has on society. Even when we do wake up and do something about those issues we don't take liquor away from ALL people because they can't handle it. We don't take cell phones away from ALL people because they refuse to not text and drive with them . We shouldn't take (or keep) guns away from ALL people because some of them can't handle them either.

More and more it seems we're creating a nanny state that everyone loves to whine about, but on the other hand seems to unknowingly wish for.
