It wasn’t always this way, and it doesn’t need to stay this way.”

The Democratic and Republican parties have created a duopoly, limiting the ability of anyone else to compete. In response, Maine voted in ranked choice voting (after several failed attempts). In the last election, True Red state Alaska voted for ranked choice in a referendum, while True Blue Massachusetts rejected it.

Referendums are themselves a response to past excesses, as are open primaries.

Really, if you are going to keep repeating the "both are just as bad", then throw down and explain how. It's like somehow trying to enact laws that will save lives in a pandemic is just as bad as outlawing organizations from simply requiring safety equipment/masks for their own community.

Yes, it's absolutely futile to try to work together with an opposing force whose entire goal is your defeat.

Polarization is happening everywhere, and it's the extremes on both ends that continue to fan the flames. They make their money/donations from the outrage.

At this point, there is no fixing it. "working together", that ship has sailed, crashed, and sank.

When one side is actively showing violent imagery killing their political opposition multiple times, without censure from anyone in their own party, the dance is done. There isn't coming back from that. We're no better than when (insert any failed democracy here) failed to stop the (insert the radical political party that took over the country with an iron fist) all those times in history. We're no smarter now than then, and it WILL happen again, as the last 5 years has clearly demonstrated.

Now we're in a global pandemic where MILLIONS have died, and continue to, and the fuckin right is more concerned about personal freedoms "MAH BODY MAH CHOICE" than the CHOICE of WOMEN for THEIR OWN FUCKING BODY. Too stupid to know, or care, what the definition of hypocrisy is.

Why aren't they getting rid of all the drunk driving laws? Seatbelt laws? ALL vaccine mandates for schoolchildren that have been in place for DECADES?

Now, they, led by their "hey he's dumb too! now I can speak up!" president, the crazies and idiots are out of their holes and emboldened.

FUCK them. Fucking science denying pieces of shit. The body count is on them.
Thank you. You've illustrated my point far better than I could ever articulate it.

Your "false equivalency" mantra is getting as stale as the racist card and "snowflake".

Then dispute it with something more than vague statements.

    Should the vaccines be mandated?

    Should mask bans be permitted?

Should willingly unvaccinated individuals still have their care covered by the government if they catch it and need hospitalization?

Should employers use vaccine and mask mandates in an error to provide safe working conditions for their employees?

Which is exactly why it intrigues me so much. I really need to dig into it deeper. I've only read about the advantages, but there has to be some disadvantages that no one likes to talk about.

You really gotta push it to the extremes for the disadvantages to matter. So if you do look into them, make sure to pressure test the scenario that is put forth. Arguments against are usually just straw men or someone that has no idea what system validation is.

No, Lepage winning with less than 50% of the vote due to a spoiler running is what prompted the push for ranked choice in Maine. The trick to ranked choice is your official parties can only run one candidate, independents can run 37 if they want to, you run enough similarish people and dilute the vote down, one of them will win. What's amusing was this being spelled right out in the promo vid used to explain ranked choice voting during it's ballot period, they start with a dog person and cat person running, dog person just barely wins 'cause cat people are picky about breeds in this example for some reason. Now they flip to ranked choice, and it's dog person vs 5 cat people who each prefer a specific breed, and a cat person wins, yay for democracy... If you're going to have ranked choice, in my mind there shouldn't be a per party limit on candidates. Put up 3 dems, put up 4 repub, 7 independents.

Edit: Second issue I have is it's supposed to auto-simulate run offs, but ranking someone 2nd isn't the same result as 'Ok entire voting base, now your choices are reduced to X/Y, pick again'.

There is literally only one disadvantage, and that is that so many people don't understand it, because it's not talked about enough.

The biggest disadvantage is that you need to spend a few minutes educating voters about it. I guess the 2nd biggest disadvantage is that it makes collating the results a bit more work.

Eh... Computer age does it all in seconds.

What I find funny is that in Ireland, where they've had this for years, it used to all be done by hand and it would be done in stages and take a couple of days. When they implemented a computer system that would do it all in seconds, voters actually liked the slower hand counts better as it made the whole election more exciting.

They talk all about that in the link I posted above.

The RNC is already hard at work developing numerous, multiple, great, fantastic "Ranked Voting" conspiracy theories and legal briefs as to how every election they lost was "rigged" and every election they win was the bestest, most fair, accurate, fair, excellent, fair, truthful, fair correct election count EVER

They have done it in Australia for as long as I can remember. Thank god they enacted it in Maine, but they did it after I left the state

It took two or three tries in Maine. Not sure about Alaska.

Baker, putatively a Republican, came out against it as did a number of top Democrats.

In our district in Boston, it is common for as many as half the elections to have no Republican on the ballot. The district was shaped to do that. The choice is effectively made by the 15-25% of voters in the Primary.
