My dad lives in Florida and my mom is in Wyoming. No chance of that anymore. I miss that haha.

I haven't lowered my standards enough for Aldi yet haha.

The owner of Aldi is part of the same family as Trader Joe’s.

My wife and another good friend worked for them.

Their eggs are every bit the quality of Stop & Shop and Hannaford.

Time to get yourself some of your own chickens

Buddy of mine at work has some. Was telling me all about it. I told him to talk to my GF, she wants some.

I raised laying hens a few years, 35 years ago, never again. I had 36 hens and a rooster, a rooster is necessary imho if you free range you chickens, the rooster keeps em in line, only laying eggs in the henhouse nests, and back in the henhouse in the evening instead of roosting in a tree

we got 3 dozen eggs a day the first year, second year that was down to 2 dozen , 3rd year, it wasn't worth buying the feed

with a rooster, I had a tough time finding someone to tend the chickens when I went on vacation, pay for 2 weeks was 40 dozen eggs

somehow, family of 4, we managed to consistently use a dozen eggs a day, and 15 dozen a week to sell

first 2 years nearly 100% of eggs were jumbos, lots of 2 yokers, never had eggs smaller than extra large, iirc, the chickens were "sex links", a cross between a New Hampshire Red, and a White Leghorn. hens were red, roosters were red with black wings

We pay ~$9 a dozen for those here at the Sunday farmers market in our hood. Thankfully, the veggies are great and actually really affordable.

It's kinda mind-blowing, but they're still running it. I get that it is essential, but social distancing is NOT possible at it. We haven't been going and resorting to prime now.

    Depends what you want.

The experience is a cool one if you are willing to put in the work.

    Issues you will run into:

    Animals eating your chickens

Decreased/lack of production in the winter - unless you run a light bulb on a timer

    Molting

    Death from Hen Pecking

In NH you have to buy minimum 12 chicks, in Maine you only need to buy 6

    Speaking of chicks...

They are often hard to sex (discern gender) at a young age. Therefore when you buy them there is a chance that you will be getting more roosters than you had initially planned.

    Forecast 3 as of 3/24 - for 4/3 - Cases 923,000 Deaths 6,000

    The obvious take-aways:
    1. This is rapidly evolving and nobody really knows the trajectory
    2. Cases increase with testing, deaths are deaths
    3. It is almost impossible to forecast with "hot spots" cropping up, i.e. the entire state of assholes that is Louisiana
    4. Wherever you are, doing the things to avoid it becoming the next hot spot is pretty much all we can control
I know these are just your #s, but we need to take the positives where we can, that is 0.7% death rate. As of right now, I'm seeing on TV there are currently 65,000 verified US cases and 906 verified US deaths, so Approximately 1.3% and that is with extremely limited testing. Not great, but it could be much worse and as you said "Cases increase with testing, deaths are deaths" and we still need more testing so that % should decrease.

Or a Kick Ass neighbor like I have, they may be Drump supporters(we don't talk politics), but his wife drops off a dozen fresh eggs from their chickens at least once a week

    Re: Nervous yet? covid-19

Another "good use of data, bad privacy protection" story:

Cell phone location data maps where people are social distancing — and not

    https://www.rcrwireless.com/20200325...ancing-and-not

Unacast grades states on social distancing

How well are people adhering to recommendations on social distancing and staying at home to help curb the spread of the novel coronavirus? Cellular device location data is providing some insights on that.

Norwegian company Unacast, which is backed by Telia and other investors, last week launched a map in response to the COVID-19 pandemic which analyzes smartphone location data from the United States, on a state-level scale, and gives each state a letter grade on how well its citizens are doing on social distancing.

According to Unacast, the top five areas which are doing the best at social distancing are the District of Columbia and the states of Alaska, Nevada, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

The bottom five states in terms of social distancing were Oregon, New Mexico, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Wyoming was the only state to earn an F on Unacast’s “Social Distancing Scoreboard,” which you can find here.

that was the reason that I got the sex-links, very easy as the roosters develop the black wings almost immediately after they hatch, the place I bought the chicks from (blue seal in Rochester) gave me 13 chicks/doz, I ended up with 3 roosters and 36 hens, butchered 2 as soon as they were old enuf to start cock fights

apparently repealed, when my neighbors bought 6 chicks a few years ago they had to get them in Maine cause no one in NH would sell them less than 12. there were some law changes in 2011, and rule changes in 2014
