i heard from a very reliable source that the aliens from area 51 and roswell are still alive, and that its GW and the first lady!

    you've been abducted too?

I'm really not 100% positive on the rationing, my captors just eluded that something big is up, the last few days of GW,

aliens from area51 are dead, but aliens from their home planet are here and alive

you mean the US government is going to bend over further to the oil cartel (aka OPEC) and try to limit the demand in our free market instead of controlling the asking price.

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

I am gonna be 100% serious here and say that the pressure needs to be put on the automakers of the world.

They need to quit slacking and produce more hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. they also need to make hybrids more affordable so that fuel savings can then be determined by the consumers. right now because of the high costs of these alternative fuel and hybrid vehicles it almost impossible for the average american to afford the cost upfront to help the overall problem.

we as a people can contribute, but it cannot be forced, at least have them all thinking they have a choice. stop selling cars that get less than an average 20mpg and start putting more effort into the future of auto production.

the internal combustion engine is over 100 years old, you mean to tell me that they still cant figure out how to get more fuel efficiency out of a 8 cylinder and dont say they have, because those half on half off engines still eat as much fuel for city driving.

    Why pressure anyone?

Do your part and the market will follow.

No, hydrogen isn't a viable alternative currently. The energy required to produce it is HUGE.

Why pressure anyone exactly! corporations are not anyone they are wallets that market towards the consumer and the consumer will buy based on what the market has. limit some of the market and the consumer will be forced to follow.

I plan on it, i am in the market for a civic.

You have a point hydrogen is possibly out of reach but what else are we left with?

I give up. i am gonna go out and buy an H2 and just wait for my gov't fuel card so i can never drive my mortgage on wheels.

electric is viable for most consumers, it's only a problem when your daily driving exceeds the range

I saw a discovery channel show about a car that runs on compressed air, it seemed very practical for many applications

I actually read about a new drive sytem alltogether. its hydraulic. i would quote real numbers, but i may have to scan the article in before you all believe it.

The company worked directly with the Hummer co. to develop it and what they got in the end was for lack of a better word unfuckingbelievable.

they took a baseline H1 and installed their drive system and took the truck from 10c-16h mpg and increased it to 100c-82h mpg

It may be the soultion we need. the problem with the system was the cost. as usual the implementation of the sytem into any prodution was astounding on top of the fact that it is a completely untested sytem and the risks are really still unknown.

it worked by building up 3000psi of hydraulic pressure and useing that to propel the car. the engine only had to work hard enough to keep the pressure optimal meaning it never really had to be more than idling unless on the highway. and when braking the pressure was reversed to refill the tank. ill try and find the article and scan it in if i cant find it on the intrawebs.

Not the article i read but some info behind the concept.

Re: Rumor from a somewhat reliable source

Why cant companies just "steal" for lack of a better word, the Tesla's idea and throw it into a compact? I find it hard to believe most people need to drive more than 200 miles at a pop. I would think there would be a huge market for that especially for commuting.

Plus I think the whole "demand" thing is lost on cars. We buy cars because we NEED them, the car companies sell us what we need, based on what we think we need. Its an endless cycle. Its nearly impossible for a large majority of people to stop buying cars (large enough that the industry gets the hint). Thus the industry keeps selling what they think we think we need. Its an endless cycle.

    .
most people don't, that's why electric is viable for most people

wouldn't work for me, one day I only put on 50 miles, the next 300, electric would be viable for me, if I could recharge as conveniently as filling up a tank of gas.

most people think that electric is not viable cause it don't work when your on vacation travelling.... why not rent a conventional car for your vacation ?

I think another reason that electric doesnt work is the cost.

the initial cost is alot of the reason people shy away from the new tech.

Also looks have the most to do with it,

why dont peoplde buy minivans like they used to? because they can buy H2's and suburbans and everyone knows its cooler to drive an SUV than a mini van.

I will admit to that....besides the Toyota Camry and Civic hybrids, I don't think I have seen anything that looks remotely nice enough where I would be caught driving in...some of them just plain hurt my eyes. And the intial cost...that's the ONLY thing that kept me from buying that beautiful Toyota instead of my Sonata. I purchased that car for over $18 000 for pete's sake.

Buy a diesel and convert it to a veggie burner. You can burn waste vegetable oil instead of diesel. With our nation's current eating habits there has got to be enough fryolator grease getting poured down the drain to keep us driving for years! I can picture it now: buy a supersized number 2 meal and get a gallon of "fuel" for free!
