    Re: Trump

Also heard a wonderful piece on NPR this morning regarding the White House's position on the victims of the USS Cole suing the Sudanese government. Yep, they're siding with Sudan. Trump Administration Sides With Sudan Against USS Cole Survivors In Lawsuit : NPR

Any guess on the motivation? Maybe it has something to do with similar legal action being brought against the Saudis for 9/11 attacks and not wanting to set any precedent that could make serving a summons to them easy. Judge Gropey Hands wants to know "what's the big deal?"

"Before Whitaker joined the Justice Department as Sessions’ chief of staff, Whitaker was the executive director of the Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust. FACT begun in 2014 which operated as a conservative nonprofit specializing in legal and ethical issues related to politics."

So he OBVIOUSLY is going to be looking into the questionable legal and ethical issues of the Trump administration. Right?

I wish... the "free" portion of medicare is hospitalization only, you want to include seeing doctors, you need Part B, you gotta pay for it, there are still deductibles and co-pays, to cover them, you need a supplement thru a private insurer. Oh. you want drug coverage too!! Part D, also, thru a private insurer, another premium to pay

Single payer, hardly, The biggest difference is that instead of one premium to pay, now you have 3, 3 insurance cards to carry....., OH! you want supplementary coverage for cancer ? yep, tack on another premium, by the time I add it up, I'm within a couple bucks of what I was paying for an HSA plan before I was forced (for all practical purposes) to sign up for medicare when I turned 65 (10% premium penalty every year you wait after 65)

I’ve said a thousandy times it should be less expensive to eat healthier foods than to eat shittier foods. An apple grows on a tree. It shouldn’t cost more than a double cheeseburger.

Most of that is driven by (political) economics. The imbalance is mostly driven by tariffs and subsidies...

Except the taxes being mentioned are on real meat, not fast food. Quite the difference in my mind between that 99 cent burger vs apple and a real burger and the apple.

    In your mind, sure.

In reality, most all fast food meat is just that. It's not "fake" meat. Sure, it may be processed more, but it doesn't change where it came from.

Besides, the carbon emissions alone to produce a pound of beef justify increased cost vs other more environmentally friendly methods of protein production.

    Re: Trump

Personally, I don't have a problem with farm tax subsidies, for real farmers. Not talking about the guy who has 6 chickens and calls his 5 acres a free range farm. The common farmer makes no money, and they provide us food, kind of important. Their pricing is set by distributors who make usually double the margin the farmer does without the risk. And there are fewer jobs harder on the body. The mega-petrochem-farms are a little different story, so I guess it's a lot of semantics. And the subsidies people love to bitch about isn't much at all to each individual farmer. What these guys pull from the ground isn't put there by dead dinosaurs, they're working for it.
(Caveat, my family are farmers in the middle range area. Couple thousand acres, dairy producers. They struggle, it's hard to see. So yes, I'm biased when it comes to farming.)

Also biased but our farm is smaller. I wanted to work there the rest of my life, my stepfather couldn't afford to pay me though. I thought I'd be doing more good by getting a job and renting out the vacant house on the farm instead, so that's what I did.

My problem isn't with subsidies, it's with people wanting free enterprise and open markets -- until it applies to them.

Did you hear about the farmer who thought he was reasonably compensated for a reasonable amount of work? Me neither.

I think he is referring to Farmers who support Republicans because they believe in "free markets" and "capitalism", but yell for farm bills and would go on a murder spree if we started bringing in ethanol from Brazil instead of wasting corn to make it ourselves at a very high cost...
