Hey guys. Suprise! It's a national emergency all of the sudden.

Straight to you from the guy that bitched about executive over reach for nearly a decade.

Using existing law is different than just claiming executive privilege. Blame congress for giving the president these powers.

    Re: Trump

Pelosi's response/threat is just way to good. Trump and his pool of hardcore supports might not give a crap and think it is the right thing, but I think this action will move republicans in congress and the "I only voted for him because I couldn't vote for Hillary" folks strongly against him. The fact he's likely to take money from defense spending should hopefully have an negative impact on another facet of his supporters.

I think this is a pretty big nail in his "public opinion" coffin. I also think this will absolutely solidify him as the worst president of all time (although I don't think there was going to be much competition anyway). Its a deeply polarizing action, but its also uniting both sides against him and his core group, which is a FANTASTIC thing.

If the democrats can put up a fiscally conservative nomination, it will be a landslide victory in 2020. Trump's pool of supporters is dwindling.

    Re: Trump

The Trumper is the only one declaring a national emergency that is stealing money already allocated to other agencies! And that is a hugh deal!

    Re: Trump

This certainly deviates from the normal pattern of national emergency declaration - it is hardly a sudden threat nor something that is incapable of being addressed through typical processes. I *think* the emergency status also exempts them from requiring competitive bidding for defense spending, so they can essentially take all that money and give it to whoever they want as long as they file a report in six months. Most or all previous emergency declarations addressed international or health issues - not domestic policy and not involving large sums of money being redirected.

Trump is a businessman. The sole intent is to make money for himself and his buddies. Would be very happy to be proven wrong of course.

    Re: Trump

What's to stop the next Democrat president from declaring a national emergency to try and combat gun violence or climate change?

I remember when Sen McConnell warned the Democrats that they would regret using the nuclear option for confirmations. This will end up backfiring on the Republican party...
