    Ahhh....good times!

Call Central Sports in Taftville CT. They have a ton of old parts that are just sitting on shelves in the back room. You might get lucky.

I just saw that on craigslist and thought of this thread. I'm not the guy selling that motor, or know anything about, just thought I would let you know its there. I know it sounds like you will be getting into alot of work with your motor. Tim

god willing parts have been ordered. last thing i need is a new cylinder, the current one is to far gone to hone (according to the machine shop down the street). think i have a line on a cylinder though so it shouldnt be much of an issue.

once i get all the parts it will go together quick, which is good as i am sure there are parts i missed on my order.

If you need a bike for that event let me know, I'm bringing up a spare 250 that has not been claimed yet. Good luck with it

Get a new rear tire too!

Trust me, that thing has a hit in the top end that will make you wonder if you are riding on ice!

Are you gonna paint the frame and gussie this thing up a little? It's a good looking bike.

Have you looked the suspension over? I'm sure those seals will let go in short order when you start riding this thing.

    Re: 1982 YZ250 project

hoping to throw a coat of paint on the frame, going to give it another cleaning this weekend and see where I am at. After 27 years of being in the dirt, getting all the scum off so I can paint is proving to be a challenge.

i need to put up some new pictures to show where I am at, but things are coming along well. not sure if I had mentioned it earlier in the thread, but the entire linkage, including swing arm pivot was pretty jammed up. when i took the shock out, the swing arm didnt even move. standing the bike up i actually had to put my weight on the frame to get it to squat! so over the past couple days i have disassembled the linkage, polished up the bolts and removed all the bearings and bushings. what a mess! i found one bearing that actually retained its needles, but they didn't move. all the needles had fallen out of the other bearings. the outer race of the swing arm bearings were crushed paper thin in some spots. all new bearings and bushings should be arriving shortly.

i should have new fork seals waiting for me when i get home tonight so the forks will be done this weekend.

regarding the rear shock, i have to talk to peter a bit. the manual makes it seem as there isn't much servicable on it, which i doubt, but i've never been inside of a shock so i need to learn what i am looking for. the shock is huge! i'm 6' and from the ground this thing reaches my thigh.

i cleaned up the engine cases and removed the crank bearings/seals. i should be installing the new ones this weekend. fortunately all the tranny bearings were good. used crank on the way from ebay, once that shows up i will have the bottom end back together.

i still need to locate a decent cylinder. made it to the machine shop with the current one and its too far gone for them to do anything. jane has the same bike as a parts bike so i'm hoping that might work out.

Ha! sounds like a big project! I had a similar linkage situation when I bout my KDX. I had to replace the swinger axl as well. The bike did tide like new when I finished though.

Yeah it's been fun though. allows me to tinker around in the basement and stay out of trouble. So far I am still under budget so its cool. Once I start to put "too" much into it, it will lose some of the fun.

When i had to wash the 35 year old crud off my cb350 frame a wire brush, gas, and a firm toothbrush did the trick. Then again it was not a dirt bike, good luck.

Crank bearings are in. That was easy! Throw the seals in next and figure out how the tranny goes back together. We'll see what else the night brings.

I hate to mention it - but it falls in the 'while you're in there' category... Swingarm bearings, and shock bearings/heim joints...

    Re: 1982 YZ250 project

well, just to update those that are watching:
crank bearings are in, but i put a little too much pressure on one of the seals putting it in and ended up folding over a portion of the rubber edge of the inner diameter. rather than risk it, i pulled it out and will throw in a new one. i test fit the tranny back together to make sure i knew what i was doing, much easier than i thought. once i order the new seal, the bottom end will go together quick. i havent ordered it yet though as I am working through the shock linkage and have a feeling there may be more stuff to order.

did the fork seals last night, just have to add oil and i am good there

buffed down the frame and wire brused where needed, ready for paint. not perfect, but it will look better.

started to assemble the rear linkage. this is going well, but just making sure i am not missing anything. so many bearings, bushing, seals and washers to get in the right order.

At this rate i should have a nice, fully suspended, rolling chassis soon. hoping by the end of the weekend, but i have a lot going on so i'm not sure how much time i'll have.

right now the big sticking point is another cylinder. think i am going to try and track down another machine shop for a second opinion.

lol. doubt mine will look that good.
but...... hoping it will run better!

i'd really like to do a full restoration..... but too much money for no return. think i'll get this one running and functioning well and see whats next. really been having fun with the project though.

    Re: 1982 YZ250 project

Got the upper linkage completely assembled last night. Complete opposite of how it was when I took it apart. When it came apart, the parts that were supposed to move, didn't; and the parts that weren't supposed to move, did. Going to be like butter now!

Will add some new pics soon, always run out of time at the end of the day.
