Yeah. remove chamber, spray a bunch of brake clean in there, pour a few handfuls of small rocks in there, and shake-n-bake. This will also clean out carbon that can really build up.

I like to load the pipe up with oven cleaner myself, really gets the carbon moving.

    Re: 2005 CR85R struggles

Oddly enough I bought oven cleaner on a whim last week... never cleaned an oven in my life but a small voice told me it would be good to have in the shop.

Cleaned the airbox and still getting the same thing.. fires up then quickly bogs out, all wet. So mousey isn't entirely to blame.. maybe.

Haven't had much time aside from work & daddy duty this week but getting my hands dirty this weekend hopefully.

Side note: might have some good riding weather tomorrow/saturday in which case I'll be squeezing some hours in on the gixx

Side side note: Technically the bike still belongs to a buddy who refuses to sell it, but never rides it so I'm "taking care of it indefinitely". It's more like I'm fostering due to neglect lol The state had to step in

Side side side note: I'm actually really interested in an RM85 for myself, I'm keen on the Suzukis and power valve sounds nice, plus they would make a great couple for some weekend fun. Been chasing out some craiglisters and friends and might end up with something.. anyone ride both?

Did you swap the plug yet and clean out the carb?

It sure is easier typing, but those two things will likely fix everything that ails ya.

    Re: 2005 CR85R struggles

Gave her some love last night, will pick up fuel tomorrow and see if it helped.

What a fuss getting plugs. Five shops and all I could get was an Autolite. :/ Have some NGK's coming, air filter, Scott grips & FMF packing.

    - deep cleaned the air box; mouse was quite settled in
    - cleaned carb w/ air compressor/carb cleaner & inspected
    - cleaned/inspected reed valve
    - emptied old fuel, removed/inspected petcock & cleaned fuel filter, a bit cruddy
    - replaced plug

The old plug was pitch black and wet. We'll see what tomorrow holds...

Keep in mind that cold air leans out the mixture. Factory jetting on an MX bike does not take winter into account. A slightly lean 2 stroke is awesome right up until the piston melts. Speaking of which, excuse me while I go rejet.

nice work and +1 to carsick's post ... while you have the carb out and clean, note the jets, needle, needle clip position and air screw position. jot all that down and compare to stock.

    Right on thanks carsick.

Noted all the jets/settings but nothing stamped on the main jet, do I have to measure it or am I missing something? Took pics of it all in case.

    45 pilot which sounds stock

    Re: 2005 CR85R struggles

hmm, the main should have a number stamped on it. if not, i would order stock + cold weather recommended.

would be terrible to get it all buttoned up then wring the shit out of it having some fun in the snow only to seize the top end

Pull it apart again, post pictures of what you're calling the main jet.

The OEM main / pilot combo is a 142 main, 40 pilot FYI.

    Re: 2005 CR85R struggles

She's running great now! Just used 91 octane at the pump 32:1 per Honda for now.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Pretty sure I fouled the plug by keeping the choke open for so long first time I started it, after that it was just a hopeless battle. Was in bad need of a tune up anyway so now I know what I'm working with!

    No doubt that would suck!

Honda calls for a 142/45 down to 39F then a 145 main down to about 20F. Gonna pick up a few jets this week and prob go up to 145.

Manual says 142/45 and the pilot is definitely a 45 atm

Pretty sure it was the main jet. Haven't gone over pics but hopefully they reveal my stupidity lol

That all being said... got a new set of tires for the spring so maybe I should throw some screws on these old ones, haha

Just FYI, one jet size poses no risk. You would have to be like 4 jets too lean and holding it WFO to cause a meltdown.
