Doc,
Congrats on the 250 X, I almost got one. I went for a WR250 my 1st bike back to the dirt and I am glad i went 250cc. After a year I switched to a 450If I had this bike 1st I 'd be dead.
I change oil every 100 miles or so, and filters every other or third change. I try to get it before 10 hours. Manuel says 20 hours, seems a bit long. One reason I like the 450 is I don't have to rev it as high which i assume is kinder on the oil/ engine.
I bought two extra air filters and it makes it easyer to keep up on it. I like the biodigratable no-toil oil. My wife hasn't caught me washing them in the machine yet.
That way you oil the 3 filters, let them dry over night and the stuff works. If the oil doesn't dry I think it gets sucked into the engine.
I also like the PC filter gasket it takes the place of filter grease. Add in the Twin Air filter cover and when you clean bike, change the filter, you put it on and spray Mr. Clean in the air box and hose it all out.
The engines really last a long time if you do the basics. I put over 2,000 miles on my 250 and the valves never moved. The engine was tight and fine and I sold it and it is getting thrashed some more.
Now the important thing in Burlington is having a place to ride so give me a call when your all set.

It pays to play.
Ride fast,
You will get farther before it is over!
The, as you put it, average recreational rider doesn't ride for 60+ miles at a time or 5-8 hour eh?
A trip to Pachaug state forest for us is always in the 60 miles range for a days riding, not uncommon at all for a woods/trail rider
My local dealer has complete Honda 250/450 heads in stock, not sure the reason? And I gotta order a friggen gasket for a Yamaha....
Have fun with the bike and good luck with it The good thing is the first owner of it was very anal about taking care of it...and Mike didn't use it long enough to neglect it
Yamaha
Roadracing I'd change oil every 4-5 sessions.
IE: Friday practice (3 session) then Saturday morning practice (2 sessions) and change oil during break before races. Race Saturday and Sunday (3 races or so) and change again before heading back up the following event.
Not so anal about air filter for roadracing RMZ applications (dirt in roadracing?). Every race weekend for Supermoto applications.
