I was wrong about the strap, it doesnt reach around, so IDK. Not even close, I put it back how it was.
All cleaned up, carb cleaned, motor back in, wiring done.

Wire wheeled the rusty exhaust and hit it with bbq paint and new stainless hardware (had to drill one of the heat shield bolts out).

Got a call today that the new tires are mounted on the wheels. Throttle tube from ebay should be here Thursday or Friday, install brakes, throttle tube, grip, wheels and tires, change out the motor oil, and ill be kicking it over this weeknd!

Picked up the tires today!!!! Got home and see they have the front on backwards

Its a scorpion tire. it looks mostly symmetrical.

Im sure I can get it swapped back but it will take an hour round trip drive

Swapping it shouldn't be too hard, time to get some irons and learn the technique!

It'll likely be fine backwards, but you've gone this far reviving the bike, why not get the details right where you can?

You are right, and I knew that was the answer. Just running out of steam at the end and was hoping you would say, "Doesn't really make any difference on a little bike like that!!!"

Re: 80s Suzuki DS80 rebuild has begun!

It's alive!! I kicked a bunch and got no fire at all. Pulled the plug out and checked for spark, plenty of spark. Put the plug back in, kicked it once, and it fired right up!!! Smokey as hell at first and high idle, but I quickly set the air screw and the idle and the damn thing purrs like a kitten!!!

Just need a few more parts and I can take it for its first lap around the lawn.

    80s Suzuki DS80 rebuild has begun!-20200618_130447-jpg

First, I am quite surprised how much BIGGER the KDX80 is than the DS80.

Second, I can't believe how much harder it is to find parts for the KDX!

I have about $220 in parts on the way.

    -Chain and sprockets
-complete airbox ($75 used, only need the lid, but couldn't find just the lid)
    -Engine oil fill plug
    -levers
    -air filter
-gas tank pads and mounting strap

Oil cap was chewed by a mouse I think. Heated a flathead with a torch and melted it in, got a new cap for like $10

these are great builds, i'd love a KDX like that for the yard

my lil dudes are getting into working on bikes so we dug back into my 1980 Yamaha LC50 Champ 2T scooter project, been a blast to work on together. should continue my thread i started on it, we have some sweet mods planned.

regarding the unobtanium petcock ... a refreshed petcock for the Champ is ... FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE DOLLARS

yup, most complicated motorbike i've ever worked on which = very rare tiny bits all over it. pretty sure i got pissed at the OEM petcock and tossed it. wish i kept it, i'd sell it to the guy refurb-ing them. he'll do a $150 core if you supply a shit one when purchasing new. it's the delicate diaphragms that boost the price, it's vacuum assist ... gravity feed for this guy. fuck that noise.

good 'ol 32:1 for the KDX would work fine ... i would just run modern oil at 40:1 if it were mine. we run all the 2Ts here on 40:1 Amsoil Interceptor, vintage included.

Re: 80s Suzuki DS80 rebuild has begun!

Well, this KDX project is an abortion. Parts are rare and expensive.

Rear brake shoe fell apart, I ordered a new one, and its the wrong size, so returning and trying again.

There is no spark currently, and point/condenser bullshit is out of my expertise.

I get 2.2 ohms from the one wire to ground, which doesn't seem super right to me.

A meter from the one wire to ground does get some AC voltage when I kick it, but it fluctuates too much for me to measure.

I get 3.3k ohms across the coil.

I confirmed the kill switch works, and seems to operate by simply grounding out the one wire when off is selected.

For troubleshooting I have the kill switch disconnected.

it has a brand new plug in it.

    any ideas?

    edit: this says 3.2 ohms,

    https://www.fixya.com/motorcycles/t2..._80_bought_new

Im getting 3.2k ohms, Im assuming its a typo on their part? The coil and the plug look new.

edit 2: well, I watched a vid that says I should get like 4 ohms from the lead to ground, and mine is open, so fuck it, Im gonna buy a coil.

Re: 80s Suzuki DS80 rebuild has begun!

Remove the condenser if you don't already have a replacement, that'll tell you if it's the culprit. All it does is slow the rate of points wear, it's not required to run.
