You're welcome Scottie. And you did just fine for your first ride. Not falling is good, but we don't even count the number of times we fall in dirt. Nothing like the track in that way. 3-10 crashes per ride can be pretty normal at first.

Dave has an Xtrainer coming in a couple of weeks. Just rode with DucatiRdr who took a spin on mine and could see himself getting one. Mark, I'm doing Cornerspin next weekend, but you're welcome to try mine out. I just gotta do a quick oil change and mount the big fugly bashplate, as I reckon she's broken in meow.

Oh, and I went out w/ Paul to his "spot" for my first ride, which was also my first ever off road ride. You'll be fine

Which Cornerspin have you done and have you done one before? They've been on my bucket list since pontifex put that bug in my ear...

I haven't done it before, but have been trying to schedule it for a few years now. Finally ditched getting a group together and am going with a buddy of mine, who also has never done anything like this before... so we'll be a couple of newbs falling down a lot, but hopefully having some fun. Will provide a full report after!

BTW, there's room (4 spots left) for this coming weekend's school that we're going to....

Re: Beta Xtrainer - Entry level 300cc 2T Enduro

I have a '12 KTM 350 EXC-F. The thing is tall and its made to tackle fast woods riding. It comes with blinkers and plate/reg from the factory. No issues with registering a street legal machine. The bike is a race bike with plate/horn and all that. It's really fast and has a hard hitting motor that loves to rev. The long travel suspension can take all the New England woods can toss at it. The only draw back is its 970mm seat height. That's over 38 inches. Sure when you get on it it sags down a couple inches but DANG its a tall bike!

In the woods around here you develop the do or die requirement these bigger bikes carry with them. Keep your speed up and go for it. The negative is the energy wasted mucking around and picking up your bike. It sucks! You won't be dropping this bike like the tall center of gravity and heavier 4 stroke. The 300cc two stroke Xtrainer motor is tuned for a linear delivery of power. It felt like a 4 stroke power delivery with two stroke lack of engine brake. Perfect predictable power in the woods. Not that typical brrrrBRAAAP hit of being on the pipe.

Handing was surprising in that the bike didn't feel too small. The roots and rocks on the loop we were riding are the norm for this area. Picking a line and deflecting off of stuff didn't have any surprises from the handling. I was able to slide the rear around corners on the power and had a blast roosting the thing on the loop. I didn't test any hard hits as it wasn't my bike. The ability to ride it fast was fun and it felt kind'a normal to my KTM but with less plushness from the suspension. Probably due to my 215lbs on the Xtrainer's stock springs. I got on my KTM afterward and it felt like a soft couch. I am using an Enduro-Engineering replacement seat on my bike which is wider and softer than stock. The Xtrainer stock seat is FUCKING HARD. When you go to buy the thing do they first take you aside and see if you are man enough to ride it? The dealer kicks you in the nuts and if you don't fall to your knees you can buy one? Maybe I forgot how bad my stock seat was.

surprised to hear complaints about the Beta seat still, they went softer with the foam (which you can buy separately) from '14 or '15 on. my '13 RR seat is harder but i find it comfortable. no where near as hard as the Acerbis X-Seat i had on my Husky for like 5 minutes. fcuk that thing.

another free solution to stiffer seats... stand more

Can't say I have been terribly bothered by the seat... I definitely do need to stand more, so perhaps it's a bit of incentive for proper form....

Re: Beta Xtrainer - Entry level 300cc 2T Enduro

Also on the general my impressions so far:

-Soft is friendly, I'll probably need stiffer springs at some point
-Engine is incredible, can lug from practically zero rpm and I've been able to ascend any hill I've attempted to tackle. Haven't stalled at all except hitting the rear brake and forgetting to have the clutch in while going down hill.
-Overall an incredibly easy bike to ride, total and 100% complete dirt newb here and I've managed to survive my first two rides generally in good nick, although I've been going slowly and trying to stay within my limits... might be "not trying hard enough" but the simple fact I was able to hop on as a complete novice and not get frustrated, even once, with anything about the bike is a testament to how user-friendly it is IMO.

I couldn't be happier w/ my purchase thus far.
