Re: Beta Xtrainer - Entry level 300cc 2T Enduro

As sad as it is after over a year owning this bike, I think I finally broke in the suspension... and realized it sucks.. haha
I've been noticing more bounce recently and the bike pogo sticking over rocks, roots, etc. I decided before today's ride, to make some adjustments. Rebound adjustment made 0 difference from all the way in, to all the way out on the front fork. I was confused by this and a quick google search says replace the 5 weight fork oil fir 15 weight for "some" improvement? There is NO compression damping on the forks!
For the front, I rode today with the rebound setting at full tight, and added 7 full turns to the spring preload. Bounce test while sitting, it felt like no changes were made, however when riding it, it felt slightly better.
Next up, add 1 turn to rear spring load, and tighten the compression and rebound by 3 clicks. With both front and rear adjusted some, it felt a bit more settled.

From what I've read, the forks on the Xtrainer are pretty much garbage. What are you local guys that have these bikes doing for upgrades, if any?

Other quirky things with my bike, the dash resets itself every time you shut the bike off, so you can't track the trip miles and time ridden.

Starter randomly misses and just spins without turning over the engine.

Oil injection light sometimes comes on even though the tank is full.

Most local guys are opting for selling their Xtrainer and buying a YZ250x

the 250X looks like a sweet ride, Sideshow (Chris) on here has one. hot bike.

if you're putting some coin into the XT, you could go with the Cartridge Kit for ~$400 or the Sachs CC upgrade for ~$1,700. you'd have to look up reviews but the cartridge kit might be a nice baby step.

bummer on the other quirky stuff. mine has been rock solid although suspension tuning has been a chore. way better after Rob at Motoworx revalved both ends. the clickers actually work now.

I wouldn't bother with the bandaid kits in this situation, reasearch says the forks are cheaply made and upgrades to them are hit or miss.
I see myself with more free time next season to ride, if that is in fact the case, I'd send it down the road and replace it with a 250x before dumping 1700 into forks.. haha

Or just find a set of SSS forks off a Yamaha for cheap and call it good?

Good idea! Then after I get the cheap forks, I'll have to source axles, spacers, wheels, brakes, triples, etc from the Yamaha to make the forks work. I'm more of a put gas in and go type as of late.

As someone who's sourced and entire SSS front end... eBay and you can often just score the whole setup in one go. Fortunately Yamaha builds lego style, so you don't have to be that picky with matching years, wheels for example swap across a huge swath of years. If you go that route let me know and I'll happily help, but I also get the gas and go idea too.

Someone go buy a Beta 125 RR-S, ride it, tell me if you like it, then sell it to me at below MSRP.

I really don't see the point of buying the Sachs fork for the Xtrainer at $1700. MSRP of Xtrainer is $7k, MSRP of 300 RR is $8500...you're well past "should have bought the RR" point there. I'm really no fan of the XT, sorry Mark. Scottie looped his in my back yard and the entire tail section exploded. Seem to be made of ticky tack.

also curious why not an RR instead of XT ... i don't see $1,700 as a big deal if you enjoy the bike and plan to keep it. a refresh/respring/revalve can come close to that.

on sourcing SSS, Boano has been making fitment kits for the RRs, not sure on the XT.

Scottie should replace the tail with Polisport plastic instead of OEM. brittle plastic has been a complaint for the years after mine which i THINK they addressed with the current models. i've never had an issue with the two sets of plastic i own.

EDIT: BUT in this case, Mark should just grab a YZX that XT will sell quickly.

Time to go back to my roots and buy blue again! Walked out to the shop yesterday to see a puddle of antifreeze under the bike. I was a bit disgusted so I just closed the door and walked away.
One of these days I'll see what's leaking, fix it and find it a new owner!

This thread is an example of how hype works. The bike may have great potential for someone, but it wasn't the answer for most people. Be wary, the next great bike is usually just hype. Tried and true bikes are always hard to beat.

And we'd all be faster for it! LMAO. yes, but this one had a LOT of hype, and has fallen desperately short on a few areas.

i don't agree, and not just because i dig Beta ... this bike was released for a specific user segment, the height, and suspension 'deficiencies' were clearly explained and work for who the bike was intended for. i believe it IS the modern day KDX with a magic button.

the head o-ring issue was a manufacturing defect of the o-rings themselves, not a Beta-made product. unfortunate, but it happens. few bucks in parts (if you even have to pay) and you're not thinking about the issue again.

look at the ownership differences between Scottie (new to off-road) and Mark (not new to off-road). seems to highlight the bikes strengths and weaknesses, to me.

they sell like hot cakes. i don't see that stopping.
