Beta head! :)
Ok, the KDX went on to be a very highly successful racebike with minimal mods. Do you see that in the XTs future?

I've ridden a handful of KDX's in the past decade, the Xtrainer feels miles ahead of the kdx IMO. I know at my skill level, most bikes stock suspension works good enough for me out of the box, couple clicks here and there, and I'm content. The XT is the first bike I feel needs real suspension work above clickers and spring adjustments.
I do like the bike for the most part and I don't feel it was hyped up beyond what I was intending to do with it, it's not a race bike, not a hard core trail/enduro bike, it's simply a play bike as advertised.
I do however feel build quality is pretty low, I've felt that/said it when I first got it, and have the same thoughts now. My past KTM's have had similar quirky issues, so it's not limited to Beta... I'll just say European bikes.
I did some investigating today for the antifreeze leak, I couldn't find anything. The head, water pump housing and thermostat area all see dry.
My guess at this point is, it could be coming from 2 places?
First, the little vent tube on the water pump housing that goes into the frame? Puts antifreeze in the frame and drips out the frame when the bike sits?
Second, similar deal but with the radiator overflow? That doesn't go in the frame tho.
I took the bike for a ride today and could smell the antifreeze, but found no signs of leaks.
I wonder if you could get some fluorescing dye and try and find it that way? Put a little in the coolant tank, grab an UV light and see where it ends up..
your issue may be different than the typical head o-ring issue but an easy way to test is to ride it ... let it cool ... crack the rad cap. if pressure escapes when cool, it's the o-rings.
Replaced the O ring head gasket last fall, all seamed fine. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, I pull the bike out of my basement, tried to start it, but the starter wouldn’t catch and turn the motor over, disgusted with the heap, I walked away. Last week, finally got it to start, went for a few laps around the property and all seemed fine. Open the garage yesterday to see a big puddle of antifreeze under under it. I’m done with it, lesson learned
Wow, sucks.
Bummer. When are you going to the Yamaha dealer?
sucks ... which o-rings did you use (Beta or KTM)? how does the t-stat junction look? ... did you talk to Dave yet?
He's taking it back?
What a bummer, this bike looked pretty great. However this might increase my chances of finding a cheap basket case in a few years that I can regret.
