+1 on the pipe thing. I've had a hard time keeping mine from leaking from the exhaust port. First love tap on a rock and the whole pipe seems to rotate around the frame and not seat in the port right. Only solution I've found so far is liberal use of sealant.

The pipe on this x-trainer looks harder to mame to my eye.

    Compare to my two hunny.

KTM Freeride is the king of this though.

The xtrainer pipe looks like the best compromise of performance to protection to my eye.

Honest question knowing nothing about dirt bikes.... wouldn't some kind of bash plate to protect those expansion chambers be a thing?

I would rip that beta. I like it a lot. With springs, valves and a big fuel cell they may have built the ultimate woods weapon.

Sort of, but it creates other "issues". The stiff carbon fiber ones spread the load and will tweak the whole exhaust, and mounts. Or transfer that energy directly to the head and crack the flange (ask me how I know). The aluminum segmented ones don't really do much at all. The monster Hyde racing skid plate/exhaust shield will trap and carry a LOT of mud (weight).
The free ride/beta have the expansion chambers tucked up and sort of out of the way. It's appealing on multiple levels.

With a big expansion chamber dangling down, a bash plate can prevent dents to the chamber, but transfer a lot of force to the point where the pipe meets the head, causing bigger damage. I think a lot of (higher level) racers just consider pipes a consumable and run without protection. The idea of getting the pipe up to a position where less force will get transfered toward the head flange is generally the best protection you can get.

The plate protects from impacts from underneath to a large degree. But notsomuch from the side. Most experienced riders who don't drop the bike as much as I do.
It is stunning how wide the pipe is on the machine. Looking down the axis of the bike from the front you cannot see the right side peg as it is completely hidden behind the pipe.

The answer is either guards.. which would need to be huge (and heavy).
Or redesign the pipe.. which likely sacrifices performance (power).

To Paul's point, the Freeride likely gives up a lot of power for that pipe design. I also question how effective that (already small) expansion chamber is piped that far from the head!
From afar, the Beta looks like a nice compromise.

    Pipes are repairable too.

That Beetah really is a slick piece. Its light and low while keeping it's belly high..

If I was shopping for a new woods weapon it would be the cross trainer or the 300RR both seem to be great machines.

For some reason I just can't get on board with MotoUSA's videos. They scream of being made by '90's era infomercial type peeps with the crappy panning shots and background music. Why can't our domestic rags seem to get in front of the trends in publishing... both print and video.

Still makes me want one even moar tho.

    Just frickin' doeit!
Or at least a 450 EXC. Rada's is nice, damned nice. And I've seen them in nice condition 2nd hand for less than 50% what a new 500 runs.

Mine was less than half of a 500 and in pretty decent shape.

on the dealer size thing... i think it's just happening this way due to Betas size, they're not very big, obviously, although they've been around for a long time (1948 for moto). seems they want to continue to grow sensibly rather than promise the world and end up on the short end of the stick. they've been gaining steam from around '09 on once they started making their own motors and focusing more dev cycles on the enduro models. the trials side has way more history than that. think those dealers were always pretty small as well though.

anxious to hear how he likes the Beeta compared the Kay'dem. i doubt durability will be an issue, the motors and components seem super stout. 180hr top ends still looking like new upon inspection from racers.

is he keeping the oil injection system in place? the 300 'Race' model may already have it removed, i can't remember.
I'm not sure what he is changing, he's like you, likes to fiddle with everything, so I wouldn't be surprised if he mixes the oil himself.
He's been going to Romania for the past couple years to what he called a Beta Camp training, where you spend a week there and ride Beta trials bikes, Enduro bikes and even SuperMoto.

Here's a link to his website if you feel like translating..or can read Finnish.

I swung into Gillette for the J-day expo right at the end of the day yesterday. Basically just to see the Beta's up close and personal since I heard motoworx would be there. Glad I went. Got to sit on the X-trainer, poke and prod it a bit. Really cool bikes. Spent a good long while talking to Brian Dussault. Seems like a really good dude. Motoworx has a demo day setup for April 9th out at their place in Hatfield. Im really going to try and make it out there for that. I may be in trouble....Im now dreaming of swapping out my KTM for a new BETA!
