I just want something to go on the trails every once and awhile and maybe go riding with my brother ( he has a Banshee).
I was thinking of a KLX or a KLR
or should i just get a motorcross one like a KX 250?
Any suggestions would be great
Thanks
I guess it would depend on if you wanted to ride it in the trails(exclusively) or on the street also.If your gonna just be riding the trails with the banshee then i would get an mx bike, the handling will be way better and the bike will be much more fun in the trails. The 2 stroke 250's are fast and fun, cheap to rebuild, which you will be doing more often than a 4 stroke. Ultimately its up to you on what you wanna do with it.
thanks for the input
2 strokes versus 4 strokes
what are the pros and cons?
is it Hard to be constantly rebuilding the motor?
A properly broken in 2 stroke motor will run you quite a while if the maintence is up to snuff(oil, plugs, airfilter, coolant), but all the new technology is heading in the four stroke direction now.To rebuild a 2 stroke is cheap , my 4 wheeler is a 2 stroke 92 quadracer, and fresh piston and rings will last 2 summers, but this is on a highly modified engine running race fuel just to give you an idea.I say anything that you take offroad is gonna take a beating or else it just wont be fun, so the motors take alot of stress. Its good to rebuild them before they blow up like i do.Either way you go,just get something that you will be able to grow into so you dont get bored with it............................... Sorry im rambling on, if you want any specific info ill try to help ya out if i can... later
forget maintenance.... 2 strokes have this ritarded narrow power band and when you hit it... the damn things flip over.
4 strokes have a dependable grunting torquey power delivery.
i am biased by the way. i love the big 4 stroke thumpers!

lol, i think thats the part of the 2 strokes i love the best, the instant power.Dont get me wrong i like a nice big thumper and with some mods you can make them very quick but it takes way more $$.I just grew up riding 2 strokes so i am a lil biased myself in that regard.Just have fun with whatever you get![]()
Go for a KDX, or other type of trailbike, if your riding in the woods, MX bikes are great for track and pit riding.
There is no need to mod a 4-stroke MX bike, they make more power nowadays than a modded 2-smoker of equal classOriginally posted by damannz

4-strokes have a much more tractable power as well.
You can't go wrong with the Yamaha WR's or the Honda CRF-X's for general purpose, great in the trails and you they could handle some MX and pit riding![]()
Yamaha
Yep a 4 stroke makes just as much power as a 2 stroke if you put a 250 4 stroker vs. a 125 2 stroke ........250 2 stroke vs. 450 4 strokeit will take a highly modded 450 size 4 stroke to compare to a nice running slightly modded 250 size 2 stroker.........Everyone has their likes and dislikes, all the new technology IS going into the 4 strokes,,im just saying 2 strokes are cheap fun, the kdx is a great bike all around, same with the wr's,i say go ride a couple different bikes then make your choice.

Yeah maybe pre 1998 that statement would be true, That's not the case todayOriginally posted by damannz

If you highly mod the 450 and slightly mod the 250 as you say.... well do we need to go there?

2 Strokes are cheap...but the maint. intervals are closer, and time is money.
If you want a 4 stroke that will do what your looking for aside from being street legal - search the for sale section here...there's a nice 450 in there for short coin![]()
wow thanks for all the replies...sort of turned into a 2 stroke vs 4 stroke with great info
no mikes got his own 'tards. i dont have wheels that will work for ashley on the track and i cant get the title from heath.... so she's not much use to me. if i can get rid of her i wanna get a KTM ot a yammy next year.Originally posted by HBerry

With my experience the four strokes have always been a real let down for any serious motocross riding. I know today things have come a long way from the old days of xr 250 1985. The bike really sucked compared to cr250 or even 125.
So knowing things are changing:
What are the faster fours now?
I have been hearing about he yamaha 450r? is it called.
they are racing it with the 2 strokes in the 250 class. my friend says he would take this 450 over the old 250. that it is that good.
so what are the other comparable bikes that have this kind of power.
what's your thoughts?
been a while for me for the dirt.
