    Re: Bumpy tires again

I'm really confused. The Husky came with Dunlop AT81s front and rear. I'm riding old pasture sod and rock ledges right now. I Can't find fault with the grip. Especially on the tough sod. They really punch in and grip. I'm having a tough time getting used to the really stiff sidewall. I feel that the tires should not hold well but they do. They also seem to grip the rocks well. Part of me want's to hate these but then they are working pretty well. One area that I don't care for the non compliant carcass is when crossing roots and small logs. The front deflects pretty easy.

PS it's almost time for traction spikes.. Damn ground is starting to set up.

The rear wears like iron, that’s part of the reason people love them. I have no experience with the front.
I wanna ride. Like, a lot.

Bummer about the thumb dude. Tell you what.. I'll go out and ride for you..

On the tire front. I sprang for a set of mixed terrain tires from Mike Studs. I've always wanted to try some winter riding. Paired with some grip heaters I should be in for a new adventure

    Auto's or rally's?
I assume he calls the rally studs mixed use. I expect you'll be satisfied. That dude is a pretty colorful character.

I was torn between long and mixed terrain. I figure there is a greater chance of riding light snow and frozen ground than deep snow these days. If the snow gets deep i will ride ice or the wife.

I was exposed to the IRC Gekkota IX09 yesterday.. This tire is shockingly supple. The racer i talked to about it says he can get a couple hare scrambles out of one and trail ride until it's toast. Outstanding on wet rocks. Anyone try one?

not yet ... i wanted to try the Gekkota bofore the IBEX but didn't have access, no US suppliers at the time ... the IBEX is stupid supple as well ... i bet they're all (Tackee inc) very similar except for weight and longevity.

So, swapping back to knobs from ice I broke the rimlock on the front tire. (was seized) I put the knob on without one. Bad idea? or fine?

If you run low pressure and brake aggressively then you will need a tube shortly and have an option to install a new lock. If you run 14 and flow in the sand then you will not have any trouble

That's what I was hoping. afterward I did pick up a new rimlock. Just trying to decide if I bother re mounting it.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

i would install the new rim lock. your terrain has been expanding beyond sand alone, it would suck to ruin a good ride because the tire shifted and lunched the valve stem.

I liked the Bridgestone X20's. Will throw on a new set for the start of this season!

Seeing as I finally got a dirt bike, I can participate in this thread. I currently have a Bridgestone M59 on the front and a Pirelli MT-16 in the rear. One of the guys at my club said this was one of the "hot set ups" for New England woods riding.

That is pretty much the standard set up in the NE. Some are playing with the Goldyn tires Which I might try on my new bike this year.

Ok. You shamed me into it. Rimlock is on. Took like 10 minutes. This stuff (tire swapping) is so easy now. I can't believe how hard it seemed just a couple of years ago.

Duncan, Smutty mentioned the Battlecross X20, our buddy Tim has been digging the X30 which is an intermediate tire (20 being for softer terrain, 40 hardpack) ... i used to really dig the Pirelli MX32's (previously the MXMS) when i was doing more track on the TC with mixed to loose stones. kept buying them over and over.

i think either one would be a solid option on the CRF.

    Re: Bumpy tires again

I have the X30. This is actually the new designation for the M59 that I posted about in the original post of this thread. Full circle! I just remounted it for it's second season. Has held up great to my use. No chunking knobs yet and decent wear. The rear is also going back on, but shows a fair bit more wear. I'm trying to be less of a tire princess after bootcamp last fall. Hahaa! We'll see.
